We as humans, grew up knowing that there was evil in the world, by many fascinations. If our parents and/or family didn’t tell us things were evil, it was our religion or community that elaborated the wrong doings of others. We grew knowledgeable and in that knowledge we grew to be cautious and careful of our surroundings and of those willing to do evil. But what exactly is evil and what makes theodicy related to this grand confusion of, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” I was taught that bad things happen to people whom deserve it. Bad things are what God sends to people to punish them for their wrong doings in life. I know now as an adult that – that wasn’t the case in this world I live in. God gave us the choice to do the right and wrongs in our life. Evil people, will chose to do the wrong purposefully. These people know that it is wrong, know of the consequences, yet perform evil deeds anyway. According to Dittman
(2004), “Situations can foster evil by: making people take a small first step toward a harmful act with a minor, trivial action and then gradually increase those small actions.”
This to me says that a person may begin small, then his desire for wickedness will increase to larger things. For example, a person may like to torture insects or small animals, even begin to severely bully someone. After that, this person might not feel satisfied, and move along with physically hurting someone, or even murdering another person or animal. Perhaps a person likes to make small fires, after a period of time, this person will set an apartment building on fire. All it takes is the feeling of wicked satisfaction, and completely forgetting the love that God intended them to have and experience. This to me is evil, in the act of free will. If I were an evil person, it would seem simple to attack a good person, rather than another evil
