The film Psycho, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, is a psychological thriller that was created in 1960. The main theme of this film revolves around psychological illnesses. The film focuses on the main character, Norman Bates, and his psychological problems which include a split personality, voyeurism, sadism, guilt and self-punishment, and anal fixation. Throughout the movie you can see Bates exhibit these traits at different points; however, some traits are not as clearly evident as others. This film takes an in-depth look at how someone who possesses a mental illness might behave or think.

I don’t believe Bates to be a ‘bird of prey,’ or “born killer.” Birds of prey are not disgusted by the sight of blood or death, because it is in their nature. When Bates finds out that his mother killed Marion, he screams and almost becomes ill by the sight of Marion’s lifeless body. The last scene of the movie concludes with Bates sitting in a police interrogation room. Bates’ mother can be heard talking about how the police know it wasn’t her who killed those people because she is dead, after which Bates looks up at the camera and smiles. I believe this indicates Bates’ mother knows she still has control over her son because he allows her personality to take over his, and that she got away with killing those people because Bates will have to suffer the consequences as she is dead. Bates’ staring in to the camera also indicates to the audience that he knows we are watching him, fulfilling our voyeuristic
In the film, American Psycho, Patrick Bateman was a wealthy investment banker who also happened to be a serial killer. He was highly intelligent and was charming which attracted many of the women who came his way. Unlike most people in the world, he lived in constant pain. He was rarely happy with himself, and also hated everyone around him. He felt that he needed to inflict his pain on others in violent ways. He always had something disgusting to say such as, “I like to dissect girls; I am utterly insane.” It is outside of the norm to speak in this way, therefore he would be considered deviant. The word psycho also means split personality. Alfred Hitchcock gives clues for this. e.g the word "Psycho" which is featured on the promoting poster has been completly shattered, which makes you think that the film is about split personalities.

Norman Bates was an American serial killer and keeper of The Bates Motel in California. The mise-en-scène is something that can go overlooked, but is very vital in understanding the meaning of the film. According to the book Film Art, mise-en-scène is all of the elements in front of the camera to be photographed, and because of that, this film technique is one that viewers notice most (p. 112). So this includes things like characters, props, nature and even behavior. Motifs and symbolism are prominent throughout the entire movie. They both help develop the plot either by continuously appearing throughout the film or by having a specific meaning that is a lot deeper than what it looks like on the surface.
