“The worst thing about that kind of prejudice… is that while you feel hurt and angry and all the rest of it, it feeds you self-doubt. You start thinking, perhaps I am not good enough”(Nina Simone). In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the characters Scout, Jem, and Atticus grew up in a town called Maycomb. The great depression was going on at this time. Jem, Scout, and Atticus dealt with a trial that causes racism to cause a really big problem. This affects everyone in Maycomb. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee uses characterization and conflict to present the the theme that as a society racism and prejudice needs to be overcome.

After Jem found out that Tom Robinson died he was a little upset. He was kind of confused on everything because he thought everyone in the world were all nice and innocent people. In the courthouse Jem found out the Miss. Gates was talking bad about Jem and scout behind their backs. While the trial and all the drama was ending Jem was still very upset. “He leaped off the bed, grabbed me by the collar and shook me. ‘I never wanta hear about the courthouse again, ever, ever, you hear me? You hear me? Don’t you ever say one word to me about it again, you hear? Now go on!”(Lee 331). This quote was when Scout was talking to Jem about what Miss.Gates said and Jem got really upset. He was still trying to figure out and adjusting to everything that was going on. Later that night when Scout went to talk to Atticus she was worried about Jem. Atticus said, “He’s having a rough time these days…Atticus said that Jem was trying hard to forget something, but what he was really doing wa storing it away for a while, until enough time passed,” (Lee 331). This shows that even Atticus knew that Jem was going through a tough time. All in all, Jem is now realizing that how people treat each other is very intense and it should change.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, presents the theme racism and prejudice to be overcome by the society through characterization and conflict. Racism and prejudice needs to be overcome in the future so people are created equal. It is not fair if you treat whites different from the blacks. If the blacks have to drink out of a different water fountain then the whites, then that is not fair. Everyone should be equal and treated with respect.
