Often at time’s society forces us to make choices we would rather not make, mainly because one is different or a different color. The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, is about how a teenage Indian who lives on Spokane reserve moves to a white school and gets shamed for being Indian, for making this decision his tribe has disowned him for leaving the rez and moving to the city. The main ideas are the rez, school, and family/friends. Jr’s dad is a drunk, but he loves his son. He has never missed a basketball game,Dad is an alcoholic who will disappear for days to drink. These show that Jr was disowned by his tribe and his best friend because he and rowdy were best friends, but after Jr told rowdy that he is transferring to redardan he got punched and rowdy was not in “touch” with Jr after that till basketball. For Jr to get jumped on Halloween means something bad had to happen and betraying a tribe is very bad. Both of these show that Jr was disowned because nobody from any tribe could do this for no reason.When Jr gets to the new school he gets shamed for being at a white school and being Indian.The teachers treat him different than the others in the class. “They stared at me like I was Bigfoot or a UFO”-Jr, this here shows that people are not used to seeing Indians.The teachers treating Jr different is showing as if he doesn't matter as much as the others in the class. When Jr and Rowdy where friends, when Jr would mention a white person Rowdy would get mad at Jr for talking about white people. Also when Jr changed schools Rowdy would not have gotten mad if he was moving schools if he liked white people. This shows that Rowdy hates white people, with a good reason, white people have shamed on first nations for a long time so it would make sense for him be mad at white people. This affects Jr because he and Rowdy are best friends but when Jr goes to a white school their friendship is over because his hate for white people is more is worth more than his love for Jr. Rowdy is a very good basketball player. He dropped 50 on Jr’s team the first time they met, but the second time they met rowdy got shut down by Jr. And he has led his team to victory. With rowdy being this shows that it was hard for Jr to guard him, he is a good ball player and that society sees him as a good red skin ball player. Additionally, a central part of identity development includes ethnic identity (ACT for Youth, 2002). While some teens search for cultural identity within a smaller community, others are trying to find their place in the majority culture. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is a novel about Arnold Spirit (Junior), a boy from the Spokane Indian Reservation who decides to attend high school outside the reservation in order to have a better future. During that first year at Reardan High School, Arnold has to find his place at his all-white school, cope with his best friend Rowdy and most of his tribe disowning him, and endure the deaths of his grandmother, his father’s best friend, and his sister. Alexie touches upon issues of identity, otherness, alcoholism, death, and poverty in order to stay true to his characters and the cultures within the story. Through the identification of the role of the self, identity, and social behavior within the book, the reader can understand Arnold’s story to a greater depth.
“I’m never going to act like my mother!” These words are increasingly common and yet unavoidable. Why is it that as children, we are able to point out every flaw in our parents, but as we grow up, we recognize that we are repeating the same mistakes we observed? The answer is generational curses: un-cleansed iniquities that increase in strength from one generation to the next, affecting the members of that family and all who come into relationship with that family (Hickey 13). Marilyn Hickey, a Christian author, explains how this biblically rooted cycle is never ending when she says, “Each generation adds to the overall iniquity, further weakening the resistance of the next generation to sin” (21, 22). In other words, if your parents mess up you are now susceptible to making the same mistakes, and are most likely going to pass those mistakes to your children. In The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexie shows the beauty of hope in the presence of a generational curse. Even though the elders are the ones who produce the curses, they are also the ones who attempt to break Junior from their bond forming mistakes. The curses that Arnold’s elders imprint on him lead him to break out of his cultural bonds and improve himself as a developing young man.
Growing up on a reservation where failing was welcomed and even somewhat encouraged, Alexie was pressured to conform to the stereotype and be just another average Indian. Instead, he refused to listen to anyone telling him how to act, and pursued his own interests in reading and writing at a young age. He looks back on his childhood, explaining about himself, “If he'd been anything but an Indian boy living on the reservation, he might have been called a prodigy. But he is an Indian boy living on the reservation and is simply an oddity” (17). Alexie compares the life and treatment of an Indian to life as a more privileged child. When faced with harsh living conditions or situations, it is easy to become stuck in a negative mentality which doesn’t allow room for positive thoughts in order to create positive change. Over the course of the past semester we have read several books about Native American’s and their culture. The two books I found to be the most interesting were Perma Red by Debra Magpie Earling, and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. In each story we see a young person from a reservation dealing with their Native Identities, Love, Loss and everything in between. Both of these novels have their similarities and their differences, but I believe they both offer insight into Native American culture that would be hard to come across elsewhere.
Junior lives as a part-time Indian, going to the white school Reardan, and returning home to an Indian reservation. Junior sums it up himself when he says "Traveling between Reardan and Wellpinit, between the little white town and the reservation, I always felt like a stranger." Penelope also lives as a part-timer, though in a subtler way. When she is alone with Junior, they talk heart to heart about their dreams and their problems. However, in the presence of her friends, Penelope is cold and rude to Junior. "She looked at [him] and sniffed... 'Do I know you?'" Gradually, she becomes more open about her friendship with Junior and reveals that she cares about him when "she kissed [him]" after he tells her he was poor. Adjusting to another culture is a difficult concept, especially for children in their school classrooms. In Sherman Alexie’s, “Indian Education,” he discusses the different stages of a Native Americans childhood compared to his white counterparts. He is describing the schooling of a child, Victor, in an American Indian reservation, grade by grade. He uses a few different examples of satire and irony, in which could be viewed in completely different ways, expressing different feelings to the reader. Racism and bullying are both present throughout this essay between Indians and Americans. The Indian Americans have the stereotype of being unsuccessful and always being those that are left behind. Through Alexie’s negativity and humor in his essay, it is evident that he faces many issues and is very frustrated growing up as an American Indian. Growing up, Alexie faces discrimination from white people, who he portrays as evil in every way, to show that his childhood was filled with anger, fear, and sorrow.
Have you ever wanted something really badly, but couldn’t afford it? This is a common occurrence, but what about food? Have you ever went to be hungry because you couldn’t afford to eat? Unfortunately, Junior, the main character in the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, felt exactly this way for food. Even though Junior didn’t have as many resources as the other “white kids,” he still chose to look at the positives. This novel shows that even in times of great hardship, people can still choose to have hope and look at the good in their lives.
