In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows how three characters express courage in the story that teaches Scout and Jem of what being courageous is in three alternative ways. One character that shows courage is Atticus Finch believing himself that he could win the case of Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson, who was a black man, had no chance of winning due to the prejudice people in the Maycomb community. When Uncle Jack asked Atticus why he was going to take the case of Tom Robinson, he said “Before I’m through, I intend to jar the jury a bit--- I think we’ll have a reasonable chance on appeal, though. I really can’t tell at this stage, Jack. You know, through life without a case of this kind, but John Taylor pointed at me and said,’ You’re it’” …show more content…

Deas helping the Robinson family. Link Deas is the owner that Tom Robinson works for during the story. During the trial, he tried his best to stand up for Tom Robinson, but all he was giving was to “stay quiet” in a mean tone. All of what Mr. Deas said was “I just want the whole lot of you to know one thing right now. That boy’s worked for me eight years an’ I ain’t had a peck o’ trouble outta him. Not a speck” (Lee 195). This proves that he cares a lot for Tom and what makes him courageous is him speaking out the truth during the trial which it wasn’t polite to say something out unless you ask permission to the court judge. When Tom died, he created a job for Helen Robinson, even though he doesn’t really need her help. Also, he helped her walk home and protect her from Bob Ewell. Mr. Ewell was threatening Mr. Deas and Helen. Soon, Mr. Deas had enough so he briefly said “You don’t have to touch her, all you have to do is make her afraid, an’ if assault ain’t enough to keep you locked up awhile, I’ll get you in on the Ladies’ Law, so get outta my sight! If you don’t think I mean it, just bother that girl again!” (Lee 249). This quote explains that no matter what Bob Ewell will do to Helen, Mr. Deas will protect her in any cost that won’t make her
