Macbeth Theme Essay Throughout our life, we met various people and the first thing we notice about them is their appearance but you can't simply judge a person by their looks. Just by an appearance you can't tell what type of person they are and stereotyping off a person’s appearance is wrong because it doesn't show what kind of person you really are. Throughout the play Macbeth, the recurring theme of things are not what they seem (Appearance vs Reality), this theme means people are people who have been misleading others by putting on a mask or lying. “Though all things foul would wear the brows of grace” (IV.III.26). It is displayed that she is not that type of person because she has to call upon the spirits to help her and this is shown when she says “Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here," (I.V.43-44). This quotation states that Lady Macbeth is just playing a role and she must do this in order for Macbeth to become king she has to change who she is. In addition, she acted strong and unyielding to Macbeth’s words because she knew to make his ambition come true she needed to act tough on him. An example of this is shown when she says ““I would, while it was smiling in my face, have pluck’d my nipple from his boneless gums, and dash’d the brains out,”(1.7.71-73)”. Furthermore, Lady Macbeth upon the day of Duncan’s death she needs to drink lots of alcohol because she needs to be a different person than she usually is and does so by calling spirits or using alcohol. Moreover, Lady Macbeth is finally revealed that acting like evil and sick is not her true self because despite attempting to hide her true self, in her sleep she sleepwalks/talks and reveals all the guilty and menacing thoughts that she is having and this is the only way she confronts them, this is shown when she says “Here’s the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand”
