Theme Paper War is often justified with the very ideals it is opposite of in essence, honor, justice and peace. The Syrian civil war is an ongoing conflict and has, to date, resulted in close to 500,000 casualties, consisting of both civilians and fighters. War has damages to every aspect of a country, in Syria for example, nearly two million children are without parents and life expectancy has been reduced by fifteen years. The people of Syria face constant threats, whether it be the well-known terror group ISIS or air strikes from Russia, chemical weapons or disease, bystanders are constantly in the line of fire. Those involved with the group put heavy emphasis on the honor of jihad. Jihad or holy war was originally the act of attempting to win minds over to Islam, ISIS has radicalized this idea to serve their own purposes. Jihad (Jihad Salafism) has developed into the idea that it is all Muslim's duty to destroy outside and internal, or even anyone who cooperated with these often Western influences or forces opposed to Islam, through violent military action. The popularity of jihadist and radical ideology is often most prominent in countries that practice sharia law, which could show that jihad is the result of the rigid religious culture that is present many middle eastern countries. Two places that practice sharia law and are now held by ISIS forces are Afghanistan and Pakistan. Sharia law is one thing that could be to blame for the settlement of extremism in countries such as these as well as Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. Sharia law, because western culture is so opposite of it, is a motivator for allowing those following radical Islam to feel superior and therefore rationalize violence against anyone seen as not abiding by the
