After the Han dynasty collapsed in 220 CE, China faced a period of political disunity, during that time Buddhism gained popularity with the Chinese people. Both foreign and Chinese monks were actively involved in establishing monasteries and lecturing on the Buddhist teachings. Many Chinese people accepted Buddhism and advocated its principles such as the philosophy and promise of afterlife over the Confucian ideals, but the truth was that Chinese people turned to Buddhism for its promises of eternal enlightenment during times of struggle. However, lots of people rejected the concept of Buddhism because it was a foreign influence, as well as a belief that it lowered the status of upper-class people. Nonetheless, many people converted to Buddhism because it allowed them to break out of the rigid hierarchy that Confucianism imposed, which is why it was common among the lower classes. Document 2, written by Zhi Dun, illustrates the reasons for the initial compatibility of Buddhism with the time period. Zhi is scholar who clearly admires Buddhism, who sees its value in correct observances in face of uncontrolled passion. Zhi Dun wrote how in times of upheaval, Buddhism presents a comforting worldview for Chinese scholars and aristocrats.

The Great Hymn of the Aten is the earliest view of monotheism. The King praises Aten as the one single god. He calls him the sun god, but he is really the god of everything. King Akhenaten praises him for every good thing that is happening in his kingdom. In the story, he refers to Aten as the “giver of breath” (Norton 50) and even “sole god” (Norton 65). Throughout the hymn, the King never speaks of another god. The King is so devoted to Aten that he renames himself to Akhenaten, which means “He who is effective for Aten” (Norton 29).
In 1955, he signed with Riverside and producer Orrin Keepnews persuaded him to record an album of Duke Ellington tunes and one of standards so his music would appear to be more accessible to the average jazz fan. In 1956 came the classic Brilliant Corners album, but it was the following year when the situation permanently changed. Monk was booked into the Five Spot for a long engagement and he used a quartet that featured tenor saxophonist John Coltrane. Finally, the critics and then the jazz public recognized Thelonious Monk's greatness during this important gig. The fact that he was unique was a disadvantage a few years earlier when all modern jazz pianists were expected to sound like Bud Powell, who was ironically a close friend. By 1957 the jazz public was looking for a new approach. Due to this, Monk was suddenly a celebrity and his status would not change for the remainder of his career. Chuck Berry is known as one of the most influential artists of the rhythm and blues, rock and roll error of music from the 50’s through the 70’s. He is famous for a vast amount of hit records including the hit songs Maybellene My-Ding-A-Ling and Johnny B. Goode. Many music historians considered Berry’s song Maybellne the first true rock and roll song. While undergoing his musical career Berry faced numerous devastating obstacles that could have tragically ended his career. All of Berry’s songs were derived from his adept lyrics and peculiar sounds. Chuck Berry influenced a lot of artists with his amazing talent. A few would include The Beetles, John Doe, The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones. With all of his success Berry became a very essential figure in the history of Rock and Roll.
The Dalai Lama is the leader of the Yellow Hat Sect of the Tibetan Buddhists. The Yellow Hat Sect originated in the 1300s with the first Dalai Lama being born in 1391, although the title of the Dalai Lama was not used until the 1570s. The Mongolian king at the time, Altan Kham, actually created the name Dalai Lama, meaning “ocean of wisdom” during the time of the third Dalai Lama. Tibetan Buddhists often refer to the Dalai Lama as the Rgyal-ba Rin-po-che as well, meaning “precious conqueror.”
Misterioso was recorded live in 1958 by Riverside Records, featuring the Thelonious Monk Quartet with Johnny Griffin on tenor saxophone instead of John Coltrane, who at that point in his career decided to go solo and at times work with Miles Davis. The others of the quartet include Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass, Roy Haynes on drums, and Thelonious Monk himself on the piano. This album is one of Monk’s interesting ones, not only losing one familiar partners but two; the first being John Coltrane and the other being drummer Shadow Wilson, who Monk lost due to poor health. Griffin and Coltrane both had a familiar understanding of how Thelonious Monk enjoyed performing, finding it difficult to stray away from Monk’s original ideas and “one note off” could change the entire piece.
Many Christians today know very little if anything about Monasticism. Some probably have never heard of the term before. Monasticism also referred to as monarchism is the act of living alone. It is a religious practice where one fully devotes one’s life to those things that are wholly spiritual.
For the second half of the semester I chose to do the spiritual discipline, silence and solitude. The reason I chose to complete this spiritual discipline is because we practice it in the first half of the semester. During that time, it made me take a break and just have three hours set aside for God. This discipline has helped me have peace and to see how important spending time in the presence of God is. Taking away the distractions of electronics and school work. The past few weeks completing this I have noticed a difference in my attitude. The weeks that I did not practice this discipline I noticed that I got stressed and was more quick to explode with negative emotions such as anger or impatience. Although, the weeks I practiced this discipline I was at peace and had a better attitude. I was especially more patient and tolerant of others around me. The lows with this spiritual discipline that I have had is I tended to get distracted, impatient, and I would lose focus on the point of why I was doing this discipline specifically. For instance, by the time I would reach the last hour I would start losing focus and was more easily distracted by the sounds and cars passing by.
