what she pleased after Jody, as in she kept herself high even though at the very end she had killed Tea Cake. One quote that has always stuck to be in this book is when the author shows how Janie is alive.
“She was peace. She pulled in her horizon like a great fish net. Pulled it from her waist of the world and draped it over her shoulder. So much of life in meshes! She called in her soul to come and see”(Hurston 193).
In the quote above, the reader can see images because when one thinks of the horizon, one believes it is carefree. Janie begins to become more free by every minute she is alive. She once felt and believed she was trapped. The quote shows development and shows how much she has grown within herself. Janie found determination when she figured her work will pay off. Janie lived for the green grass and the living flowers, and she lived that by being with Tea Cake as much as he can because yes, he stole her money but he showed her places she did not know was present. Flowers will grow, no matter what food is given to the flower, but the flower will grow. Tea Cake made Janie grow, but once he got sick, he did not help her grow. One strong characteristic that Janie did not seem to show as much, is pride. Janie showed pride in some chapters, which I enjoyed because it was her turn to put herself first. The realization of questions that was once thought about, could be answered in the years she continued to find herself. Janie also had sympathy. Sympathy became a detail in chapter three, where the reader stated “She knew now that marriage did not make love. Janie’s first dream was dead, so she became a woman”(Hurston 25).
