Thebes In Ancient Greece

Thebes, Greece was an interesting story in ancient Greece. Having an interesting discovery to different war tactics, Thebes is a story ready to be told. Furthermore, Thebes had a different mythological discovery, many wars, and interesting mythological stories.

First of all, the mythological discover of Thebes was a story in itself. It start with Cademus’ sister being kidnapped by Zeus. Ordered to search for her, Cademus walked and walked until told to stop from an oracle named Delphi. Now, Delphi said to find a city by following a cow until exhaustion. Cademus followed instructions and founded the city of Thebes. This was the beginning of Thebes in the mythological explanation, but history shows the first signs of inhabitants in 3000 BCE.

This lead to different allies and different war tactics. For example, when Persia was trying to take Athens in the Persian wars, Thebes sided with the Persians to try to get rid of Athens easily. This was an unusual ally because Persia was trying to take down Greece, but it was also a smart war tactic to take down Athens easily. Another Example is when Thebes supported Sparta against Athens. In the Peloponnesian wars, Sparta tried to take down Athens, and again Thebes sided with the opposite team against Athens to try to take them down. Overall, Thebes were smart in picking allies and plotting strategies against rivals like Athens.

Although Thebes had smart tactics, they were never successful. Being that Persia lost against Greece, Thebes was punished for siding with them, but Sparta stopped the full destruction of Thebes. Furthermore, Thebes again wasn’t successful when siding with Sparta because they saw Sparta getting too much power and backed out. This lead to Sparta setting up forts in Thebes partially taking over. To take back Thebes, the general Pelopidas got them out of the hands of Sparta. So, Thebes had the right ideas of allies, but it never turned out in their
