The potential risk in Mass Rapid Transit Construction in Malaysia

1886 Words4 Pages

The latest and top construction that is currently commencing in Malaysia is the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Project. The owner for this project is the Malaysian Government where their aim is to create an easier and better public transport facility for the people of Malaysia and also to make Malaysians life easier and more convenient in the case of travelling or getting somewhere quick. This MRT project is considered as one of the biggest infrastructure projects ever to be built in Malaysia.

The Malaysian Government allocated a huge sum of financials support for this project to commence. The reason for this project to take place was because of the growing population at certain developed areas and the increase in the number of vehicles each year that made travelling by car or motorcycle quite inconvenient. The Malaysian Government believes that the MRT project is the best solution for these traffic problems in Malaysia as people prefer to travel by MRT and reach their destination on time rather than being stuck in a jam and reaching late to their preferred destination.

This is actually an expansion project where the railways are connected from the previously built lines of the existing light rail transit (LRT), KTM, KLIA Express and KLIA Transit systems and more. A megaproject like this must be managed with caution as there are many risks involved during the construction process. These risks may not only harm the people involved with the project but also others who are not, such as a passerby, pedestrians, car drivers, motorcyclist and more. These risks can lead to serious injury or even fatality if they’re ignored. Having such risks present while the construction is in progress can be very dangerous.

Defect in workmanship
-This risk is very common in the construction industry and is still present to this current day. The workmanship in a project describes the overall quality of the construction. Having defect in the workmanship will not only cause the structure to fail but also will affect the contractors reputation in the process. The unskillfulness of the workers such as anchoring the crane wrongly, overloading plants to carry heavy objects that topples the plants, fixing up the formwork wrongly which leads to design failure and much more is one of the reasons why some construction projects experience many kinds of problems such as budget overruns, delays, shortage of material and so on. . Therefore, the more the number of unskillful workers, the more chances of accidents or wastage of resource are likely to happen.
