Series Project: 1970s Drama
The Young and the Restless debuted in March 1973 as a American soap opera focused primarily on the personal and professional lives of two families in Genoa City, Wisconsin: the wealthy Brooks and the poor Fosters. The show first revolved around the drama between the Brooks and the Fosters and then shifted to the forever long rivalry between Liz Foster’s daughter Jill and Katherine Kay Chancellor. It started when Jill began work as Kay’s manicurist and assistant to help pay her own bills. Kay was a wealthy boozing socialite trapped in a loveless marriage with a millionaire Phillip Chancellor. Meanwhile Jill and Phillip fall in love, that is until Kay picks up him at the airport and attempts to kill both herself and Phillip by driving off a cliff. Before passing away, Phillip marries Jill and gives his fortune to Jill and their unborn baby. In response Kay convinces a judge to declare that Jill and Phillips marriage was illegal since Kay was drunk when signing the divorce papers. From their the two women began an intense rivalry both blaming each other for the death of Phillip.
The main reason I decided to choose the Young and the Restless was because it sounded pretty familiar to me and it held some of the longest rivalries on any American soap opera. I was also surprised that it had actually debuted in the 1970s as it is still a popular series. The Young and the Restless also caught my attention due to the extensive and interesting plot line and twists throughout the drama. Originally I had not intended to pick a drama series from the 1970s and instead I wished to pick a drama series from the 1990s or 2000s. Though after further research and inquiry r...

...hat has been ongoing for 30+ years, it has impacted the development of other soap operas and paved way for a new type of drama. Though I only viewed specifically the 1970s television series of Y&R, I immediately recognized the contribution it made to the soap opera world.
As a drama television show that has continued for a whopping 30 years, it is rather obvious why I chose the successful series. After winning 7 Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series and 56 total Daytime Emmy Awards, it is currently the highest rated daytime drama on American television. Y&R has changed significantly over the years since its debut in 1973 but it has always remained a popular American TV drama. It revolves around rivalries, romances, hopes and fears of fictional young adults and leaves audiences hanging waiting for more secrets to be unleashed and solutions to be made.
First titled Life and Stuff, Roseanne aired its first season in 1988 and its last season in 1997. The show starred Roseanne Barr and John Goodman as Roseanne and Dan Conner. They lived in Lanford, Illinois with their three children Becky, Darlene, and D.J. The Conner’s were a blue-collar, working-class family with both parents working outside of the home. In the first of its nine seasons, Roseanne (Barr) worked at Wellman Plastics, along with her sister Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) and friend Crystal (Natalie West). Dan (Goodman) worked as a self-employed drywall contractor for his company, Four Aces Construction. Roseanne's parents, Beverly (Este...

...e the beginning of time, Television has been one the most influential pieces of media that the world has ever encountered. Bravo TV’s hit number one reality television show, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, deals with the everyday lives of modern-day “housewives”. When speaking of these women and their family life, the show shows its viewers that family life in modern times is dramatic, full of misrepresentations of how people are perceived, and how fame comes at the cost of family. The show stands strong with the critics and its faithful viewers around the world. Clearly, the show is not going astray anytime soon. Families who watch the show will eat up the drama and prays that their families never deal with those petty types of problems. The world will keep spinning in the television cycle, and drama will continue to invade the homes of millions of Americans.
The show M*A*S*H shed light on a subject that most people were uneducated on, and did so in a very humorous way. The way they saw veterans of the war, the casualties and the wounded, all changed for the people who watched the show. Year after Year, Rerun after rerun the show affects generations with memorable characters, humor, and a different point of
I believe that every message has a real meaning behind it, whether the message is important or not. The older I get the more I started to understand the true meaning about the different shows I’ve watched. It’s one of those topics we’re all too afraid to touch, which is exactly why it’s so important to talk about. I still find it very hard to talk about race, and how it is still a very important topic in today’s society especially in criminal justice system. Prison is designed to install fear in us, imagining evil men who were put there for doing crimes unsuitable by law. Prison is known to be the worst place to end up. Orange Is the New Black showed prison all in a new light. Many critics found Orange Is the New Black to be very racist. In
I will discuss a T.V show that began in 1987 and ran until 1995 and compare that to a T.V show of today Modern Family; which first aired in 2009. The two are both American family sitcoms and comedies that have had great success throughout the air. These two shows are both unique in their own way. Full House is based in the late 80’s and early 90’s in San Francisco. Now Modern Family is today and still on air going for the 7th season based in the suburbs of Los Angeles. That if you look at the family photo of the entire Modern Family cast and the complete Full House cast shows how the typical sitcom family has changed over the time. 80’s to present
There is a certain process that every human being on the planet has in common. Not everyone can say it is a pleasing experience, but nobody can deny that it happened to them. ‘Growing up’ happens to everyone one whether they like it or not. The transition between childhood innocence and adulthood is long and confusing, which often reveals questions that can never be answered. The novel Catcher in the Rye written by J.D. Salinger explores how the adult life has its complexities and can be very puzzling to teenagers starting that phase in their lives. The main character Holden Caulfield realizes the confusion of a teenager when faced with the challenges of adapting to an adult society. The catcher in the rye shows the inevitable loss of innocence
12 seasons, 24 episodes per season, 43 minutes per episode is the most time I 've ever invested in something. It was most defiantly worth it. Grey 's is the opposite of reality in a hospital which is what makes it so great! For the longest time I refused to watch it because I didn 't think I would like seeing the surgery part of the show but it 's nothing after the first episode because you are absolutely hooked. After that first episode you just know that it won 't be long before you finish the show. Bachelor in Paradise on the other hand is straight up funny and romantic reality tv. This show is a dating show to potentially find someone to spend your life with. On occasion there 's always that one person on the show that makes scenes so they can be the center of attention. These people are the ones that we match the show for because it makes it entertaining. Last season on this show there was a guy named Chad. His go to was to not be anyone 's friend but fight with all the guys in the house. This got him more screen time because this is what attracted the viewers. Then there 's One Tree Hill, a show that is based on basketball but is way more than just basketball. This show is so great that I am re-watching it currently. It 's only 9 seasons compared to 12 seasons for Grey
Can you believe that reality television has actually been around since 1948? Most of us may have thought that this idea of real television just came about in the last decade but actually it’s been around for quite some time. In 1948 Candid Camera was the first reality show to be broadcasted on television. Many considered this to be the “granddaddy” of the reality TV genre (History of reality TV). This show actually began in radio broadcasting. Allen Funt was the man in charge of this whole new production. He started by simply taping complaints of men in service and broadcasting them over the Armed Forces Radio. This is what later became known as the television show, Candid Camera. Candid Camera was known for “catching people in the act of being themselves” (History of Reality TV). Funt passed away in 1999 and his son, Peter has now taken over for him to continue these series.
...elopment of characters and their relationship. Many show today such as The Simpsons or Family guy have hints of the Honeymooner and “their palpably plain working-class settings”(81). I do not believe it just only influences sitcoms, but the television as a whole, an its involvement with the viewers and growth of shows that explored beyond the gimmicky clichés and non-issues, and dug deep into thought of subconsciously changing the way someone view television. The Honeymooners would forever be a show that was ahead of times and one that stood out as one of a kind, and we would have to give our appreciations to Jackie Gleason for creating such a show. Without “The Great One”, television would be different and that sole reason is because of Gleason talents to come up with such a creative, original and funny writing that would go on to innovate the shows we watch today.
In conclusion, Good Times brought contentious issues to the homes of Americans in the 70s. Good Times was not afraid to shine light on the controversial problems in the nation. The show helped to bring real concerns of the time to context. The show was relatable not only to blacks but to anyone that watched. By doing so, Good Times may have contributed to the awareness of STDs, gun violence and other topics on the
Throughout six seasons of AMC’s ongoing hit show The Walking Dead, Rick Grimes, the main protagonist, has grown from: a tough guy police officer with a soft heart for helping others (almost always coming with a great personal risk) to the ultimate leader and survivor. Rick’s character arc during the first five seasons of the show, were about the ongoing growth/development of Rick, along with little benchmarks along the way in the form of gruesome but necessary murder. During Rick’s character arc, he goes through three major phases that reflect his morals and view of the world. These changes are then highlighted by the various brutal gory kills Rick has achieved. We as viewers get an in depth look at this gradual evolution as he fights to survive
The Walking Dead is an allegory for the real world. It presents audiences, the controversies of the conventional postmodern society amidst a post-apocalyptic drama. The series portrayal of dissolving humanity in unfeigned bleakness both reflects and inflames our societal perceptions and fears. Through an inhuman fallacy, (the zombie) The Walking Dead humanises the hopeless actualization of our corrupted world in all its postmodern traits. Therefore, the ambition for The Walking Dead is to exhibit a world pursuing a favourable equilibrium of peace and liberty but never achieving it as it is entirely a Sisyphean. In this essay, I will argue how cinema and humankind has fed into corruption within postmodernism.
If you hadn’t figured out already, today I’m going to be talking to you about Desperate Housewives. And why it’s the best show for you to watch on Sundays At 9. HBO's Sex and the City has become a cultural icon in its 6 seasons of running. Based on Candace Bushnell's racy book Sex and the City, the show exhibits an unprecedented example of the sexual prowess of women over the age of 35. The result is an immense viewing audience and an evolving view on the "old maid" stigma that a woman's chances of finding love are significantly reduced after thirty-five. In this paper, we will closely analyze the characters and themes of Sex and the City to explain the significance of what the show represents in American culture.
