The narrator begins the story very cheerful. It all starts when she and her husband go on a summer “vacation” and they rent a country estate. The house is a mansion! The only downside to the house that is noticeable is that, “ ... a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house (Page one).” Right away, she is disgusted by the look of the yellow wallpaper. The man thinks that his wife is not “sick”, although she is going insane. The woman keeps telling him that she needs help, and he does not listen to her. To start off within the story, you can see that the woman is not normal, and that John is completely oblivious to her actual state. “You can see he does not believe I am sick! And what can one do? If a physician of high standing, and one’s own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression- a slight hysterical tendency- what is one to do” (Pages 1 and 2)? I believe that John was trying to help her at first, due to him not realizing that she was going crazy. I also believe that once he realized she had a serious problem, he was not sure what to do- so he did nothing to help her. …show more content…

She writes “That spoils my ghostliness, I am afraid, but I don’t care- there is something strange about the house- I can feel it” (Page 648). In this passage, you can see that her path of thoughts is very strange and she seems to be ghostly and demonic. She believes that if she is able to write, then she may get better. She writes “I think sometimes that if I were only well enough to write a little it would relieve the press of ideas and rest me” (Page 648”. The only reason she does not write is due to John not allowing her to write. John is so strict about her not being able to write, that he even tells his sister who helps out around the mansion to not let her
