There was a numerous amount of people accused of being a witch during this period. It started when two young girls named Elizabeth Parris, 9 years old, and Abigail Williams, 11 years old, began to have uncontrollable epileptic episodes. They claimed they felt that they were being pinched or pierced with needles. Soon after, a girl named Ann Putnam Jr. began to claim she too felt these sharp pains. While under scrutiny, the girls each claimed that they were bewitched by Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba. So on March 1, 1692, the they each were arrested and examined. During the examination, Tituba confessed to being a witch and said that she, Sarah Good, and Sarah Osborne were approached by Satan and they all agreed to do his bidding as witches. …show more content…

Before the mass hysteria of witches haunting Salem, Bishop had already been accused of being a witch and been in trouble with the law several times before. she was the first person tried because it was believed the case against her would be easy to win. Her first husband died and she married Thomas Oliver, that she often got in legal trouble with. However, when Oliver died he left his property and home to Bishop. Which led Bridget’s stepchildren to claim she bewitched Oliver to death but the lack of evidence prevented the case from going to trial. Afterwards, she married Edward Bishop and owned an apple orchard. However, on April 18, 1692, Bridget Bishop was arrested for being a witch and her accusers were, Mercy Lewis, Abigail Williams, Elizabeth Hubbard, and Ann Putnam, Jr. Also there were other people from the town that trialed against her. With each person claiming, she had haunted them in their sleep, they saw her practicing or speaking to devil, and that she would physically harm them. She was a popular woman who had a longstanding feud with the Putnam family over border boundaries between their adjoining land. She also disapproved of the controversial appointment of Samuel Parris, whom was a close friend of the Putnams, as the new Salem Village minister. The Putnams were Nurse’s main accusers during the witch trials. Some believed in her innocence and tried to defend her. A petition was compiled and signed by 39 people from Salem. Nurse was originally found not guilty at the end of her trial in late June but when the verdict was read out loud in the court the afflicted girls protested and the jury was asked to reconsider its decision. The jury reconsidered and came back with a guilty verdict. Rebecca Nurse was executed on July 19,
