The Wars of the Roses began in 1455 after the people of the House of Lancaster and the House of York began to dispute over the throne of England. The Wars of the Roses was a time of multiple civil wars between the two houses of the Plantagenet royal house over the throne of England. The war consisted of a total of seventeen battles. Both houses were traced back from their ancestor King Edward III. The House of Lancaster was associated with the red rose and the House of York was associated with the white rose. “Wars of the Roses” was not used during that time period because the ones in wars often wore badges of their protectors. The red rose was associated with the House of Lancaster, and the House of York was associated with the white rose. The wars were fought by the aristocracies and the ones who kept up the feud between the two. Each person who supported a certain side of the war depended on the marriages or the tenures they held during that time.
The problem all started with the overthrowing of King Richard II by his distant family member Henry Bolingbroke, who at the time was the Duke of Lancaster. Later, because Richard II’s government was highly disliked, Bolingbroke was crowned King Henry IV. He was crowned king in 1399 and was the first one to hold the Lancaster throne. During his reign he was he was very lawless. After he was crowned, Henry was greeted with many rebellions in Cheshire, Wales, and Northumberland. All these rebellions later ceased. Henry IV died in 1413 and his successor was his son, Henry V, who was also a brilliant soldier and had much success in France in the Hundred Years’ War.

Henry married Elizabeth of York who was Edward IV’s daughter. This caused the merging of the two houses and was known as the end of the Wars of the Roses.
Today, there is a small percent of doubt that the Wars cause a political uprising and made a difference in the balance of power. One of the main effects was that the Plantagenet dynasty was crushed and was replaced by the Tudor dynasty. Richard III's Usurpation and His Downfall Richards rule was always unstable due to his unlawful usurpation to the throne and his part as far as the public was concerned in the death of the two princes. As a result right from the start he didn't have the trust or support from his country. As soon as he became King people were already plotting against him. After he was crowned he travelled the country trying to raise support by refusing the generous gifts offered to him by various cities. However unknown to him a rebellion was been planned in the South.
Richard did not manage to recover from the usurpation of Edward and after allegedly murdering the two Princes in the tower his reputation had fallen greatly. He had lost a lot of respect from nobles and from the populus. Killing the Princes could be seen as one of the major factors of his downfall. It was common place in monarchical families to have brothers and sisters "put out of the picture", but even in these primitive times, the murder of innocent children was a taboo.
Whilst Henry VI’s was in rule during the 1450’s, England had many issues and problems that cause such instability in the country. One of the largest factors arguably is the loss of the Hundred Years war between The French and English over France. This in turn caused many problems to occur with links to almost every feud the country faced. Yet some historians argue that Normandy wasn’t the main issue of instability in England instead of other reasons such as instability.
Although The war did not accomplish any of the things that it started out to accomplish, it became a turning point in American history. Most of the issues that America started out fighting for disappeared shortly after the war, just about the same time that the indirect effects of the war were beginning to become noticeable. Started with attacks and rebellions from 1455 to 1487, it has three different stages; the first stage, from 1455 to 1464 started as a rivalry, the second stage from 1469 to 1471 was a more factional war, rather than a rivalry, and the last stage from 1483 to 1487 was an outright dynastic war (Phillips 1). Involving the House of York and Lancaster, York had the white rose emblem and Lancaster had the red rose emblem. Due to the weakness of English forces and government, (Griffiths 1) assassination attempts against Henry IV, war broke out between Wales and Scotland and lasted for two conflicting years (Lunt 260).

In the mid 15th century, the weak Lancastrian king Henry VI was controlled by William de la Pole, duke of Suffolk, Edward Beaufort, duke of Somerset, and Margaret Of Anjou, Henry's queen. They were opposed by Richard, duke of York, who gained support from the popular unrest caused by the anger over the Hundred Years War and by the corruption in the court. York was appointed protector during the king's insanity from 1453 - 1454, but was excluded from the royal council when the king recovered. He then resorted to fighting. The factions met at St. Albans (1455), the Yorkists won, and York again became protector from 1455 - 1456. The wars, however, continued. In 1460 the Yorkists captured the king at Northampton and struck a compromise whereby Henry remained king and York was named his successor. Queen Margaret, whose son was thus disinherited, raised an army and defeated the Yorkists at Wakefield in 1460. Here York was killed, and his son Edward assumed his claim. Margaret's army rescued the king at the second battle of St. Albans in 1461, but Edward meanwhile was victorious at Mortimer's Cross and assumed the throne as Edward IV. Henry was recaptured in 1465 and the Yorkists seemed to be in command. A quarrel then developed over the king's marriage, and Richard Neville, earl of Warwick, and the king's brother George, duke of Clarence, deserted Edward. They allied in 1470 with Queen Margaret, drove Edward into exile, and restored Henry VI as king. Edward soon returned and triumphed at Barnet and Tewkesbury in 1471. Margaret was imprisoned and Henry VI died, probably slain on Edward's orders. After 12 years of peace, his 12-year-old son Edward V succeeded Edward in 1483, but the boy's uncle Richard, duke of Gloucester, usurped the throne as Richard III.
