The age of antiquity bestowed unto the world some of the greatest thinkers of all time. Today, we can thank these giants of the ancient era for doing the leg work that humankind is so intent on understanding. According to Plato’s written account titled, “The Apology”, the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates states that “the unexamined life is not worth living for human beings.” Socrates’ claim holds ethical implications for today’s modern society, however we must first understand this claim in order to argue its case. From the recorded dialogues produced by Plato, we know that Socrates and his insatiable hunger for knowledge had led to his public speaking and interactions with a variety of interlocutors. It is because of Socrates’ quest for wisdom that the oracle at Delphi told Socrates’ friend Chaerephon that, “no one is wiser than Socrates”. Upon hearing this, Socrates begins to question his fellow Athenians for their wisdom and finds that neither poets nor craftsmen are the wisest. Thus, Socrates feels as though he is the wisest man in all of Athens for claiming he is aware of his own ignorance. As he tells his judges in his defense speech: human wisdom begins with the recognition of one’s own ignorance; the unexamined life is not worth living; ethical virtue is the only thing that matters; and a good human being cannot be harmed. Socrates is unable to remain silent about his thoughts because “the unexamined life is not worth living”. He even backed up this claim in with the following statement: “Men of Athens, I salute you and hold you dear, but I will obey the god rather than you, and so long as I take breath and am able, I will never cease philosophizing.” It is implied that people should reflect on their beliefs and debate about what they do and do not know, all while seeking out and upholding the values which create a meaningful and well lived
