The United States Army, in its current state, is a profession of arms. In order to be considered a profession, the organization must have an ethical code rooted in values, strong trust with its clients, and be comprised of experts within the trade. These experts are constantly developing the trade for the present and the future and hold the same shared view of their trade culture. The Army currently has an ethical code ebodied in the Army Values, which provides guidance to the individual and the organization. These values are universal across the Army regardless of an individual’s personal background or religious morals. Professional Military Education schools teach the Army Ethic and evaluation reports for leaders affirm this ethic. The Army punishes individuals, especially leaders, who violate this code. The Army administratively punishes Soldiers who do not adhere to this code, and the severity of punishment increases with rank. Not only must the commander expect ethical behavior from his soldiers, but he must also live an ethical command. In order to provide and ethical command climate, the commander must be an ethical role model that is able to gain the trust and confidence of his soldiers. The fifth issue will automatically be resolved upon the successful completion of the institution of an ethical command climate. With this culture in place, soldiers will not place items like the kill board in their company headquarters because they will understand the ethical implications of such an action. The commander will have provided the leadership necessary to set and maintain an ethical command climate. The soldiers will see the Iraqi population as fellow humans and will make the ethical decisions that can lead to winning the hearts and minds of the local population.
In the minds of many people today, the United States Army is considered to have one of the best structured organizational communication networks. This is based upon the specified code of conduct that the Army is underlyingly ruled by. This is upheld by the specific chain of command, which is easily distinguished by rank and uniformity. Strict punishment is carried out upon those who violate rules and conduct, commonly accepted by this organization. The authority figures, in the Army, set tasks, and relay a common purpose to all subordinates down to the lowest level in the organization.

The second characteristic of professionalism is responsibility. General responsibility creates the moral responsibility of marines and helps us understand the set of values which guide us. In addition, however, marines must also possess the values of other human beings and question service to a society which does not respect these values. These values include justice, common courtesy, human dignity and humbleness. A government which does not respect these values is illegitimate and cannot be said to serve the society it directs. Davenport’s various violations of the Code need to be considered from another point of view as an example of responsible disobedience. As Dr. Davenport and Antwone are both members of the military, there is a certain camaraderie experienced between them that the general public does not experience. Taking this into consideration, Dr. Davenport may be expressing responsible disobedience as he violates various standards in the Code in an attempt to respect the intricacies of the military culture (Cottone & Tarvydas, 2007). Because the military is a culture of its own, it is difficult to say whether any or all of the situations that resulted in an ethical violation were justified. It is easy to say that Dr. Davenport violated principle ethics during his work with Antwone but virtue ethics may support Dr. Davenport as he interpreted the standards in the context of the military culture (Cottone & Tarvydas, 2007).

My two strengths in the profession of arms are direction and recognition. I am strong in giving directions because I am very detailed and specific in giving orders (KAI-theory). Giving good directions in relation to deliberate leadership will help in providing subordinates a well thought out plan to further develop them into future leaders. My methodical approach discovered in the Team Dimension Profile will also be a great benefit when trying to develop a step by step plan. When I provide directions for a task or plan I try not to assume people already know things especially if it is something new or haven't been discussed in awhile. I also give my subordinates the opportunity to ask questions and ensure they fully understand the task before exiting the conversation. I also believe it is important to recognize your people. Recognizing your people in relation to deliberate leadership will help to motivate and encourage subordinates in their journey as the strive to reach their goals. I have worked hard this past year to put my people in for awards and programs. Recognizing your people shows that you acknowledge and appreciate their contributions to the organization.
In combat situations sometime, soldiers are placed in situations that they would have never imagined. That environment could cause a soldier to react in ways that are considered unethical. As a commander, you must ensure that the command climate of your organizations does not become unethical. First, the commander must not allow the combat environment to cloud his judgment. Therefore, if the leader’s judgment is obscure due to an intense combat environment, he may miscommunicate the wrong message the subordinate soldiers. Second, you must clearly understand the commander’s intent and plainly relay that intent to the soldiers. This is where many commanders get in trouble not fully understanding or assuming they know the commander’s intent. As a fellow soldier the word ethic has a great deal of meaning to us. It is ethically and morally rights to respect a fellow service member.
