Being born in the month of July means that one’s birthstone happens to be the pink to blood-red colored gemstone called the Ruby. The word “ruby” comes from yet another word, “ruber” which translates in to red from the dead language of latin, even though this stone is not necessarily always red. Rubies are used most used modernly in jewelry, but are valued by the scientific world through the use of lasers. But July’s birthstone, ruby, has a lot more to what you see physically. From it is chemical formula to it’s environment and how it is formed, rubies have unique characteristics that no other gemstone has.
Chemical Formula
Every kind of gemstone’s chemical formula is unique and its very own, and is used as a way to identify what kind of stone it is. More specifically, a chemical formula is a the way you identify a stone or any substance by the arrangement and quantity of it’s atoms and elements. The ruby’s chemical formula happens to be Al2O3, meaning it contains aluminum 2 atoms of aluminum, and 3 atoms of oxygen. These two elements are found in the quantities stated in Ruby’s, therefore introducing us to the chemical formula shown.
Hardness
Rubies have a hardness of 9.0 according to Mohs’ scale of mineral hardness, which is by definition is the “resistance of a mineral to being scratched.” (Tong 1) In other words, having a hardness of a crazy 9.0 means the Ruby is extremely sturdy and extremely difficult to stretch, coming from the fact that on Mohs hardness scale, 1 is considered the softest and 10 is the hardest. Friedrich Mohs was a German mineralogist that came up with this scale. On this scale, 9 is written as Corundum, but ruby is in fact a mineral of this substance, also giving it it’s extreme hardness.

Environment – How are they formed?
Rubies are actually formed deep beneath our planet Earth’s first layer, the crust. This relative high heat under the conditions of about 620 to 670 degrees Celsius (1148 to 1238 degrees Fahrenheit.), is just about the heat needed to create these gemstones. The most necessary mineral used to form rubies is corundum, the essential element in rubies, and chromium, that gives them their red value and color.
High in value and flawless in color, rubies are very attractive gemstones. They make not only perfect gifts, but are used in our scientific fields as lasers! They have an astonishing hardness and are very rare, but legends and cultures do not ignore the significance of a ruby, representing power, wealth and love. July’s birthstone is truly something special.
Strontium was discovered by Adair Crawford, an Irish chemist, in 1790 while studying the mineral witherite (BaCO3). When he mixed witherite with hydrochloric acid (HCl), he did not get the results he expected. He assumed that his sample of witherite was contaminated with an unknown mineral, a mineral he named strontianite (SrCO3). Strontium was first isolated by Sir Humphry Davy, an English chemist, in 1808 through the electrolysis of a mixture of strontium chloride (SrCl2) and mercuric oxide (HgO). Strontium reacts vigorously with water and quickly tarnishes in air, so it must be stored out of contact with air and water. Due to its extreme reactivity to air, this element always naturally occurs combined with other elements and compounds. Strontium is very
Aluminum is the most abundant metallic constituent in the crust of the earth; only the nonmetals oxygen and silicon are more abundant. Aluminum is never found as a free metal; commonly as aluminum silicate or as a silicate of aluminum mixed with other metals such as sodium, potassium, iron, calcium, and magnesium. These silicates are not useful ores, for it is chemically difficult, and therefore an expensive process, to extract aluminum from them. bauxite an impure h...

To begin diamonds are can be found all over the world including countries like, Botswana, Canada, Namibia, Russia, South Africa, Australia, and Tanzania. Yet, diamonds are still quite rare and are only found from two dominant deposits. The primary deposits often consist of diamond-bearing “pipes” of volcanic rock called kimberlite. Deep within th...
On the outside it looks like a stereotypical rock, but on the inside you don't really know whether it's actually a rock or a crystal. You need to be open minded and willing to find out.
Objective The ability to analyze a substance and determine properties of the substance is an important skill for AP Chemistry students. Major concepts for the “Analysis of Alum” laboratory are percent composition, water of hydration, and molecular formula. They will be used in three different experiments to determine the melting point of alum, the mole ratio of hydrated water to anhydrous alum, and percent of sulfate ion contained in alum. The values acquired in the lab should be close to the calculated values of 92.5 ˚F, 12 moles of water to 1 mole of alum, and 59%, respectively.
This indicates that Jade is evaluated so much differently than all the other expensive metals and gemstones. “Both Jadeite and Nephrite jade are stones formed of interlocking microcrystals” (ElectraStone). This makes Jade come in all different shapes and sizes. Another spiritual jade piece usually found in tombs or around them is “Jade Pi-Hsieh”, also known as the “Auspicious Beast”.
The rose quartz is a silicon dioxide with a chemical formula of SiO₂ and is a member of the quartz family characterized by its pink color. It is also called pink quartz, or hyaline quartz with the word hyaline coming from the Greek word “hyalos” meaning glass. It can be found in colors ranging from the palest pink to a very deep reddish pink. This pink coloring is thought to come from the inclusion of minute amounts of either titanium, iron, or manganese during the formation of the stone itself. The color pink is often associated with new love, new romance, and new relationships. Rose quartz stones are one of the most common stones of the Quartz family. Rose quartz crystals are extremely rare and rose quartz is most commonly found in
The layer can be buried under other layers of sediment. After a long time the sediments can be cemented together to make sedimentary rock. In this way, igneous rock can become sedimentary rock. All rocks can be heated. But where does the heat come from?
The gem started to sink into her skin until it was half-way through. The gem emitted a bright red light, representing the color of her birthstone, the ruby. The gem stopped glowing, keeping its red color. Caramel picked at the gem, which caused an itchy sensation in the skin around the gem. Her father put his hand on her shoulder, “Your soul is now linked to this gem.
The peridot is loved by many because of its stunning, leaf green color and the fact that it's the birthstone for many August babies. It doesn't have to be tough to find a quality peridot wedding or engagement ring for your beloved.
Diamonds are often found within volcanic rocks. Diamonds are made by extreme heat changing the molecular structure of coal.
I have chosen to talk about precious gemstones and crystals. There are many people now and days rediscovering the many uses of gemstones and crystals. To my knowledge each, have many different uses. They can be used as adornments, for health, for healing and for spiritual practices. You have probably never even heard of stones or crystals in this fashion before. I am going to take this opportunity to tell you what I know about this fascinating world that I have grown very accustomed to. I am not a gemstone/crystal specialist but, I do know enough about this topic to give you a slight overview about this topic.
Igneous rocks are formed from the ejection of earth’s volcanoes. Deep down inside earth’s mantle there lies hot magma. Magma is molten rock that is kept below the surface. This mixture is usually made up of four parts: a hot liquid substance which is called the melt; minerals that have been crystallized by the melt; solid rocks that have made themselves tangled in the melt because of loose materials, and finally gases that have become liquid. Magma is created by an increase in temperatures, pressure change, and a alter in composition. When this magma is ejected from earth’s crust it earns a new name called lava. The lava hardens and becomes an Igneous rock.
