Bilbo Baggins of Bag End had lived a peaceful, respectful life as a hobbit. However, one day his quiet life was shattered by the arrival of a wizard named Gandalf and thirteen militant dwarves, who persuaded him to set out on an adventure. He embarks with the dwarves and wizard on a great quest to reclaim their treasure under the mountain from the marauding dragon, Smaug, with Bilbo acting as their “burglar”. During his unexpected journey, Bilbo not only found his courage, but also golden right that made him invisible every time he slipped it on his finger. Together, they battle trolls, goblins, wargs, dragons, and huge spiders, aided by giant eagles, a skin-changer, a heroic archer, and in the end even by some they were prepared to fight; the elves and the villagers of Lake Town. They traveled through pleasant meadows, perilous mountains, scenic valleys, murky forests, sinister caves, and frigid rivers. At the beginning Bilbo wanted utterly nothing to do with the Dwarves, Gandalf and the whole adventure. However, throughout the book, he gained respect from the Dwarves. His sheltered and comfort filled life was altered dramatically, bringing out character traits he didn’t know he had. The qualities of a hero, Baggins’ actions, and choices make it clear that he truly was a hero.

After a huge battle of the Five Armies, the dwarves are finally able to reclaim their treasure and kingdom under the mountain, after the great dragon is slayed. Bilbo and Gandalf return to Bag End where Bilbo continues to live. Regardless that he is no longer accepted by the respectable hobbit society, Bilbo doesn’t mind. He had been on a life changing adventure. With the qualities of a hero, Baggins’ actions, and choices make it clear what he was. Although a hero is not always the Knight in Shining Armor who saves the damsel in distress, a hero can simply be someone who displays unique qualities such as bravery, sacrifice, compassion, and loyalty unfalteringly regardless of the consequences and circumstances. The little hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, was undoubtedly a hero.
He went from being a reluctant hero to an epic hero just from a few slight changes. Bilbo was almost forced out the door to begin his journey with the dwarves by Gandalf. He did not want to go on the journey and certainly did not feel the need to be a hero, although he reluctantly ended up being one in the book. Bilbo Baggins lived a very simple life, a life he enjoyed very much, until the day when the wizard Gandalf arrived at his door one morning. Gandalf was searching for someone to share an adventure with, but Bilbo quickly declined, saying, “We don’t want any adventures here. You might try over The Hill or across The Water,” and with that the hobbit dismissed the wandering wizard, but not before he had given the wizard an invitation for tea the next day. This of coarse, was the polite thing to do. But Gandalf saw something more in Bilbo and would not be discouraged.

Bilbo is happy to visit the elves and have tea with Gandalf, but he is also just as happy to relax in his hobbit-hole and enjoy the comforts of home that he longed for so much on his journey. He departs from his home, is initiated into a more mature mindset, undergoes a road of trials, goes through his innermost cave, and is returned home and reintegrated into society. Bilbo’s journey is also a quest for self identity, because he realizes his place as “quite a little fellow in a wide world” and learns to balance out his respectable Baggins heritage with his adventurous Took background (Tolkien 363).

Bilbo Baggins changes a lot in the novel The Hobbit. In the beginning he is a small peaceful Hobbit who lives in Hobbiton. He loves to keep things in order, and hates things that are disorganized. “Please be careful,” and “Please don’t trouble. I can manage” (Tolkein, 12). Then one day a wizard by the name of Gandalf comes and gives Bilbo the opportunity to go on an adventure. Bilbo turns his offer down, but the next day thirteen dwarves come to his house. They have meals together and they sleep at Bilbo’s house. Gandalf then convinces him to go on an adventure with them. Bilbo is many things, in the very begging he is flat, static, main, and he is the protagonist. By the end of the story he is round, dynamic, main, and he is still the protagonist. By the end of the story, Bilbo is a changed Hobbit.

If it was not for Bilbo’s courage, Thorin would still be fighting for the Arkenstone and might have also been hurt. Bilbo also helps the dwarves by being a good leader and helping them find a way out of Smaug’s lair. Without Bilbo, the dwarves would not have the audacity to try finding a way out of Smaug’s cave. Bilbo, like a real hero, always makes sure that he finishes the task he sets out to do. Without Bilbo, the dwarves would not be able to finish all the tasks that they want to finish. Bilbo is also the reason why the dwarves are still alive. Bilbo saves the dwarves from many different disasters. The disasters range from the spiders to Smaug. Through good or bad, Bilbo has been able to show the characteristics that a real hero should be able to show.
As evidence to illustrate, “ ‘This is the Arkenstone of Thrain,’ said Bilbo, ‘the Heart of the Mountain; and it is also the heart of Thorin. He values it above a river of gold. I give it to you. It will aid you in your bargaining” (Tolkien 272-273). Throughout the bargain, Bilbo sacrifices his relationship with Thorin and the other dwarves by bartering the Arkenstone to make sure the Lakemen and wood elves rightfully get their fair share of treasure found in Smaug's lair. Bilbo can be portrayed as a hero making personal sacrifices since he put the great good above his personal issues in life. Bilbo is the definition of a hero since he took action to resolve a conflict instead of being a bystander. Webster’s dictionary defines a hero as any man admired for his courage, qualities or exploits, especially in war. Some people attribute the term hero mostly to war. My personal definition of a hero is someone who takes a stand against evil or an unjust cause. The term hero can be applied to anyone, it isn’t necessary to save the world from explosion to be a hero. The act of standing up for a friend can also be called a heroic act.
