The Ultimate Fighter
What if your success counted on your fighting skills and dedication? That is the case in the new reality show, “The Ultimate Fighter”. It is based on one of the oldest theories, survival of the fittest. Survival of the fittest is how a lot of American culture is run. This T.V. show portrays American culture by using the survival of the fittest concept.
This show, like many shows today, is a reality show. There are a group of guys who are put into a house to live together. The twist is that all of the guys want to become an ultimate fighter. They will have to compete against each other in events as well as fight each other if they want to stay on the show. The winners get a six figure contract and a chance to fight with the best of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). The house is split into two teams. Each team had an even number of people from each weight class. The teams compete against each other in events such as obstacle courses, etc. The winning team gets to pick a person from their team to fight a team member from the other team. The loser has to pack his bags and head home. If a team becomes uneven, individuals are moved to other teams to even them out. This show allows people to socialize with each other since they do live together. The teams usually stick together in the house. The fighters usually only hang out with their teammates in the house. People from opposing teams do talk to each other on occasion, though the talk usually consists of “trash talk”. This may also have an effect on who the team chooses to fight. The show is on Spike TV. ... way of life for the American culture. Some people may deny it, but it is true. Not everyone or everything can work out for the best. People might not want people’s companies to go bankrupt, but they do. The survival of the fittest balances things out in America. Not every company can be successful and not everyone can be successful. If that was the way no one would do the jobs no one wants. If every business worked out then, everyone would open a business. It is cruel but we need unsuccessful people. In other words we need “weak” people. The show is a very good example of how America culture is run. America culture might not be that blunt to the point where they say get into the ring and fight to see who the fittest is. In a way everything is a “ring” and everyone is competing to see who the fittest is. That is how America runs. That is the survival of the fittest.
The symbols and language used in “Battle Royal” allow readers to understand the concept of being black in America; fighting for equality. Symbols such as the white blindfold, stripper, and battle itself all give a suggestion about how the unnamed protagonist felt, but more importantly, Ralph Ellison’s “Battle Royal” depicts the difficult struggles facing the black man in what’s supposed to be a post-slavery era.

The Real World gives the viewer a false outlook on life. Sure there are a select few that have the opportunity to live lavishly with little to no responsibilities, but that is a small percentage. The show depicts the cast lounging around in their up scale home all day, then going out to amazing night clubs drinking enormous amounts of alcohol through out the night. Many of the cast members wake up in the afternoon hours only to repeat this process. In reality the world does not work like this. Many people have to work one to three jobs just to get by leaving no room for lounging and bar hopping.
Why do colleges ask for “race” when filling out an application? Does it really matter? It may seem like a simple question, but it is not. There has been a great deal of controversy over this question and other similar ones. Giving certain groups of people a competitive edge when they apply for schools and jobs is known as affirmative action. There are people who are directly opposed to it and those that support it completely. More often however, people agree with certain aspects of affirmative action and disagree with others. The following introduces a small sample of people who have talked about affirmative action and their views on it. Few of the results are factual but rather they are opinions. The hope is that by combing other author’s thoughts and views it will make it easier for an individual to formulate their own.
Affirmative Action is the policies that have been introduced to provide equal opportunities to people who have been historically excluded. The action is implemented by providing equal access to education, salary, employment and respect to the group such as women and minorities. The policies were introduced in 1960’s during the civil rights movement in the belief of providing equal rights to the group that has been ruled out by the society. In 1961 President Kennedy was the first to use the term “Affirmative Action” to make sure that all employees are treated in the same manner without discriminating them with their race, color, and national origin. Affirmative action has been a controversial topic ever since it was established in the 1960s to right past wrongs against minority groups, such as African Americans, Hispanics, and women. The goal of affirmative action is to integrate minorities into public institutions, like universities, who have historically been discriminated against in such environments. Proponents claim that it is necessary in order to give minorities representation in these institutions, while opponents say that it is reverse discrimination. Newsweek has a story on this same debate which has hit the nation spotlight once more with a case being brought against the University of Michigan by some white students who claimed that the University’s admissions policies accepted minority students over them, even though they had better grades than the minority students. William Symonds of Business Week, however, thinks that it does not really matter. He claims that minority status is more or less irrelevant in college admissions and that class is the determining factor.
Fight Club is not about winning or losing. Paul Palahniuk’s Fight Club is about the issues of masculinity in our modern capitalist society. It is a novel about men who resist conforming to what society defines as masculine. In our present day culture, men are presented with the ideal form of masculinity that they are expected to achieve such as being successful in the work place, going to the gym, and grooming yourself to look attractive. The unnamed narrator of the story undergoes an identity crisis, which is a result of capitalism; he struggles to find himself by going through various support groups before finally attending Fight Club. The consumer driven society has replaced the traditional values of masculinity, which creates conflicts and becomes the catalyst for Fight club: a place to re-masculinize through physical combat.

The Fight Club, directed by David Fincher, constructs an underground world of men fighting with one and other to find the meaning to their lives. Ed Norton and Brad Pitt are the main characters who start the fight club. They make a set of rules in which everyone must follow.

Racism is a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. This trend has been around for a long time, from slaves, to discrimination, etc. Although in many cases, people in the time period often tend to act like it does not exist. When looking back on certain situations and their aftermath people then realize the true nature of racism. In 1962, 85% of whites thought that black children in their community had just as good of a chance of getting a good education as white children. The constant trend for lack of knowledge about racism and/or discrimination is real. Now, whites, realize that in 1962 black children did not have as good of a chance, if any, of getting a good education in comparison to white children. In 1969 nearly half of all whites (45%) believed that blacks had a better chance of getting a good-paying job than they did. Once again history repeated itself, in that many whites now realize that blacks not only did not have a better chance of getting a good-paying job than they did, they had a worse chance. (Abagond)
In West Virginia, the names of Hatfields and McCoys are the well known families involved in one of the most famous feuds. The biggest misconception of this famous feud is that the factor of why these two families do not get along, it is not family rivalry but instead social and economic factors. In reality, many McCoys were on Hatfield’s side and vice versa or some family members did not even participate in the events concerning the feud. “Apparently, family solidarity is not a sufficient explanation for feud alliances.” For example, “Although less than half of an identifiable thirty-one supporters were related to Devil Anse, twenty six---or a striking 84 percent--- were tied to our dependent upon him through land purchases or timbering.” These points tie in to the question on what determined what side of the feud someone would be on. As it is known, the Feud started ten years after the Civil War was over, stopped and then was ignited again with the death count of twelve. From the first part of the Feud to the second part, changes were happening in the Tug Valley, socially and economically. In terms of socially, the society went from a local community to having social elite and in terms of economically, it went from small businessmen such as Devil Anse to big time companies wanting to build railroads to dive into the coal and timber business. With these changes, also came the transformation of the legal system, state politics, and industrialization fueled the frustration of the families and heightened the violence of the Feud ultimately.
Many would argue that there possibly couldn’t be a hero without a villain or vice versa. But, some author’s like chuck Palahniuk author of the film Fight club go against the gain combining both hero and villain. Films that introduce characters having extraordinary depth and dimensions, always have more compelling characters, fight club is no different. Tyler Durden plays the role of the anti-hero in fight club, he is intelligent, confident, attractive, and he does whatever the hell he feels like doing all of the time. Fight club is a story told from the mind of the narrator, who creates Tyler in his imagination and gives him the ability to be both a criminal and hero. Tyler and our narrator form an underground fight club and a cult like organization
CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, echoes through my head as I walk to the middle of the mat. "At 160lbs Aidan Conner of La Junta vs. Rodney Jones of Hotchkiss." All I can think of is every bead of sweat, every drip of blood, every mile, every push up, every tear. Why? All of this: just to be victorious. All in preparation for one match, six minutes. For some these six minutes may only be a glimpse, and then again for some it may be the biggest six minutes of their life. Many get the chance to experience it more than once. Some may work harder and want it more than others, but they may never get the chance. All they get is a moral victory. Every kid, every man comes into the tournament with a goal. For some is to win, for some is to place, others are just happy to qualify. These six minutes come on a cold frigid night in February at a place called the Pepsi Center. Once a year this gathering takes place when the small and the large, the best of the best, come to compete in front thousands of people. I am at the Colorado State Wrestling Championships.
