Overview:
A storm is on the way and the family is getting ready for it. The boys are worried about their cat and go look for him while the mother puts the groceries away. They find the cat outside on the back porch in the wind with leaves blowing all around. The boys are a little scared of the storm because it was already bad outside and the hurricane was still 50 miles away. While drying the cat and watching out the window at the storm, the lights go out. The family had to eat by the fireplace and keep each other company. On a scale 1-10, I would give it 10.
This book is an imaginative twist to the original story of the The Three Little Pigs. I was surprised how the pigs escaped the wolf by being blown from the pages of the story and entered other pages of different tales and changed the outcome to those also. I didn’t realize until after the third reading that the pigs were in a room with picture walls of other stories written by David Wiesner. The artwork combined various techniques such as watercolors, colored ink, pencil, and colored pencil.
Teaching Ideas:
3. One lesson would be combining art techniques such as watercolors, paint, and pencil to create their own story by using fairytales that they heard before.

4. Another lesson would be for the students to compare and contrast David Wiesner’s version of The Three Pigs to others. I would have them create a chart showing the similarities and difference and present their findings to their classmates. This can be done in small groups or individually.
