Do You See What I See: The Unseen Burdens in “The Things They Carried”
“What a heavy burden is a name that has become too famous.”- (Voltaire). In the short story “The Things They Carried” Tim O’Brien expresses the metaphorical meaning of carry which are the physical, mental, and emotional burden that the soldiers have to carry during the war. Even though the author explain to the reader about the things the soldiers carry as a description it also help the readers define who the person is and what are their roles in the war. The author is getting the reader to understand that even though the soldiers carry a lot of physical burdens, the mental and emotional burdens weight out more than the physical burdens. He strongly tells what the mental and emotional burdens that the soldiers have to carry through the eyes of all the characters but Lt. Cross is emphasis for all the things he carry. O’Brien also shows the reader that a soldier is meant to have pride and to protect their country but the soldiers fear that they will not accomplish their responsibilities because of their reputations. The soldiers are not just at war with other countries but mostly at war with themselves.
Lt. Cross is the main character in the story and the author stressed to the reader that there is a war between personal life and war life. “He had loved Martha more than his men, and as a consequence Lavender was now dead, and this was something he would have to carry like a stone in his stomach for the rest of the war.” (The Things They Carried.42) Lt. The weapons is say that they are soldiers but things like Kiowa's Bible and the Lieutenant's pebble expresses that they were humans like everybody else with real lives, superstitions, fears, and emotions. Cross carries everything that he have that remind him of Martha such as her photos, letters, and the pebble, although she do not love him back. Some of the physical things they carry also show symbolic things. Although the soldiers carry some form of weapon, that reminds them that they are carrying the war on their shoulders. War life take everything from you such as personal life, state of mind, actions, and many more but it is up to the soldiers to carry what they like to survive.
