The Survival Guidelines The story “The Things They carried by Tim O’Brien is about the variety of things soldiers bring with them on their mission in Vietnam. Several of these things are intangible, including guilt and fear, while others are special physical objects. To me, “The Things They Carried” demonstrates the idea that mental and emotional burdens get in the way of survival. O’Brien conveys that these burdens get in the way of survival through the use of conflict, symbolism, and setting. One early conflict in the story has to do with a solider name Jimmy Cross. He experiences the internal conflict that goes on inside of him and his tendency to engage in daydreams concerning Martha, even though he knows she is not really interested in him. He blames these daydreams for the death of Lavender because he is engaged in one of these daydreams when Lavender is shot. Another conflict in the story is having guilt and shame. Later they heard that Strunk dies, which seemed to relieve Dave Jenson of enormous weight. He feels guilty for not killing Strunk and putting him out of his misery. The author uses symbols to convey the effects of the war and how the things they carry with them get in the way of survival on their mission in Vietnam. One of the most important symbols in the story is baggage. They carry knives, guns, dope, letters, good luck charms, etc… O’Brien shows that their identities are reduced to what they carry.
