“Unlike a drop of water which loses its identity when it joins the ocean, man does not lose his being in the society in which he lives. Man's life is independent. He is born not for the development of the society alone, but for the development of his self.” - B.R. Ambedkar. A man’s identity is something that should never be left behind or forgotten about. A man’s identity is who he/she is, and it lets them know that they are different from everybody else, and not part of a collective society. In the novel Anthem, the theme of identity is explored through Equality 7-2521, in which he is stuck in a world where know one has an identity. In the dystopian world depicted by Rand in Anthem, no one has an identity of their own. They are loveless, friendless, and practically lifeless souls. Their only reason for existence is for the sake of the community, and in Equality’s case, for his “brothers” as well. The word “I” is ceased to exist, and it is literally replaced by “we”, even if it doesn’t make sense in context. Anything that might allow any kind of individuality gets shut down and suppressed by the government. In the novel, it is evident that the society frowns upon new ideas, because in the book, it says,"What is not thought by all men cannot be true.",(73). This was when Equality 7-2521 was presenting his idea of electricity, and when he truly became an individual with an identity. If every person in a community is the same, no new ideas will sprout, meaning no new advances in technology.
