Equality; the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities. Ayn Rand the author of Anthem made her society, so that everyone was equal no one referred to themselves as an individual. Everyone was one with everyone. The view her book takes on equality is different from how we view equality to be . The society that her characters live in no one is better than the other. But Equality, the main character of this story brings the story to life because of how different he is from everyone else in the society. The society saw anyone who was different from the rest as rebels. Everyone is to think the same, act the same, and look the same. There was no room for people who were different in this society. The best way to find meaning in one’s life is through through individualism. Equality, had a hard time fitting in has a kid. He had felt like was different from the other kids. He was taller than the other kids and felt the the classwork that they had received in class was extremely easy. He would try to work slow to make try and make himself seem normal to his teachers. Equality, looked at himself as evil because of how the society made him feel about himself. He had dark thoughts, that he thought made him different from his brothers. He and some of his fellow Sweeper found a place where they could bring their ideas to life. It was a tunnel under the society that the Council did not know about. Equality, would sneak out at night when the city was asleep. He would time himself to make sure he got back before the sun came up. This method had worked well for awhile, until one night when he got too caught up in one of his projects. He had been arrested because he would not tell the Council where he had been. Equality, was stubborn and unwilling to comply with the Council. He knew if he had told them where he really was the might destroy his innovations and inventions.They might even destroy the tunnel. He had waited for the day that the Council of Scholars had arrived to break free from his jail cell to get his invention and show them how he could change they way of life in the society for the better. He was disappointed to see how the Council had reacted to his invention. In Equality’s eyes, he saw this as stupidity. He could not believe they would reject his idea which would be helping the society. The Council had threatened Equality by saying, “ ‘ You shall be burned at the stake’ “ and “ ‘ No, they shall be lashed’ “ (Rand 72). The Council was outrage that Equality was boasting about the work he had done, and also they were angry because he had broken the society’s laws.
