Throughout the story the author uses darkness and light to contrat the story. One of the dark sides of the story is how Emily shuts off the top of her house. It is also dark how many people only go to her funeral to see her house. Her house is a very dark place as she is very mysterious and shut off from people. When she dies people open up her house letting lightness in. Miss Emily's mind is a very dark place. After her father died she was so afraid to be alone she made sure she was never alone for the rest of her life. She has her room set up just as when she first was married. She then realized one way she will never be alone for the rest of her life. She then believes Homer is going to dump her so she w\decides that this will not be a option and she will not ever be without him . Her mind is so dark and she is in such a bad mental place. She went ahead and killed her husband so he could not leave her. She figured this way she would at least have his body to be with her for the rest of her dark life. Every single night she would sleep next to him , what kind of sane person could do such a thing. The smell alone would be to much to handle. The author shows how so much darkness is in her life, and how the darkness represents mystery and evil. There is finally light when everyone figures out what had happened and the mystery was soon gone. The whole town was so shocked how something like that could happen and how that is so dark. Several points throughout the story indicate foreshadowing of the ending. The first main point was the rotten odor coming from Emily’s house. Several of her neighbors complained to the Board of Aldermen concerning the foul stench that hails from the old lady’s household. This point helps readers contemplate and theorize what the smell that the neighbors were talking about. The second main point that indicated foreshadowing was the event that occurred after Emily’s father passes away. The readers are told that she became very isolated in her home and became distant from the world outside. The narrator also recounts that it took three whole days and several people to persuade her to let them help her “dispose of the body” (1000). This was a big indicator of what was going to happen because this was what she essentially did: kept a body dead body in her home. The third main point was when Emily successfully bought poison or arsenic from the local pharmacy. This event showed many clues of the ending. When she was buying the arsenic, she did not explain to the druggist her intention of buying and using the poison. This interaction between the two raises some eyebrows for it was truly mysterious for an old lady to purchase poison randomly. By becoming close with Robert, the man in this story experienced what was necessary to gain an understanding of what life is like for the blind. The man began to draw the cathedral to try and help Robert visualize what one looked like. What he didn't realize at the time was that Robert was helping him to visualize what blindness felt like. This short story allows us to realize that the world is greater and further detailed than what we consider it in our confined minds. Faulkner uses the view point of an unnamed town member while he uses a third person perspective to show the general corrosion of the southern town’s people.
The short story "Cathedral" by Raymond Carver is about a woman who has a blind friend who comes to visit her and her husband. Although the husband has, technically, normal vision he is in the beginning of this story the one who is "blind." Through the husband’s words and actions when he is dealing with Robert, the blind man, we can see that the husband does not "see" or understand what Robert’s blindness means or how it changes or does not change him as a human being. At first Robert makes the husband very uncomfortable, for the husband does not know what to say or do around the blind visitor. As the story progresses, we can see a change in the husband; he seems to be able to see Robert as a person and not just as a blind man.

The husband in Raymond Carvers “Cathedral” wasn’t enthusiastic about his wife’s old friend, whom was a blind man coming over to spend the night with them. His wife had kept in touch with the blind man since she worked for him in Seattle years ago. He didn’t know the blind man; he only heard tapes and stories about him. The man being blind bothered him, “My idea of blindness came from the movies. In the movies, the blind moved slowly and never laughed. Sometimes they were led by seeing-eye dogs. A blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to. (Carver 137)” The husband doesn’t suspect his ideas of blind people to be anything else. The husband is already judging what the blind man will be like without even getting to actually know him. It seems he has judged too soon as his ideas of the blind man change and he gets a better understanding of not only the blind man, but his self as well.
When her father passed away, it was a devastating loss for Miss Emily. The lines from the story 'She told them her father was not dead. She did that for three days,' (Charter 171) conveys the message that she tried to hold on to him, even after his death. Even though, this was a sad moment for Emily, but she was liberated from the control of her father. Instead of going on with her life, her life halted after death of her father. Miss Emily found love in a guy named Homer Barron, who came as a contractor for paving the sidewalks in town. Miss Emily was seen in buggy on Sunday afternoons with Homer Barron. The whole town thought they would get married. One could know this by the sentences in the story ?She will marry him,? ?She will persuade him yet,? (Charter 173).

Emily’s isolation is evident because after the men that cared about her deserted her, either by death or simply leaving her, she hid from society and didn’t allow anyone to get close to her. Miss Emily is afraid to confront reality. She seems to live in a sort of fantasy world where death has no meaning. Emily refuses to accept or recognize the death of her father, and the fact that the world around her is changing.
In the story "Cathedral" by Raymond Carver, it tells of how a blind man is open to new experiences and how he views the world compared to the husband (narrator) who is blinded by the material things of life. The husband is given the gift of sight but the true gift comes from seeing the cathedral. At the beginning of the story, the husband’s outlook on others is filled with stereotypes, discrimination, insecurities and prejudice. After all the tragic events in her life, Emily became extremely introverted. After killing Homer, Emily locked herself in and blocked everyone else out. It was mentioned, “…that was the last time we saw of Homer Barron. And of Miss Emily for some time” (628). In fact, no one in town really got to know Miss Emily personally as she always kept her doors closed, which reflects on how she kept herself closed for all those years. Many of the town’s women came to her funeral with curiosity about how she lived, as no one had ever known her well enough to know. This was revealed at the beginning of the story when the narrator mentioned, “the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house, which no one save an old manservant… had seen in the last ten years”(623). Everyone in town knew of her but did not know her because she kept to herself for all those years.
