There are many events or situations that change your perspective on certain aspects in life. In The Tempest, by William Shakespeare, many characters are influenced by sea-change. Alonso, the King of Naples, is greatly affected by this change caused on a magical and mysterious island. The island helps people realize what they need in order to be happy. Sea-change helps people transition into a better person. Alonso transforms into a great man who learns to cherish the time he spends with his children and appreciate the little things that life offers. The transformation he goes through can be grueling at times, but in the end the result is priceless. This play shows that one mishap could change your life for better or for worse.
Before the storm, Alonso only had one desire, which was power. He only cared about himself and his success. As the King of Naples, Alonso has a lot of authority, but he continuously strives for more. He has wronged many people and regrets it. When Alonso tries to apologize for wronging Prospero, Prospero tells him to “stop” and let go (5.1.198). Letting go is a key theme in this play. Alonso needs to let go of the past and focus on the present. Prospero helps Alonso in an abundant amount of ways throughout The Tempest by giving him the best gift ever, his son. He reveals to Alonso that Ferdinand and Miranda are alive and well. When Alonso discovers his son isn’t at the bottom of the sea he is ecstatic. He develops feelings and emotions, a thing which he never paid attention to until he thought he lost someone he loves dearly.
