This writing piece largely draws from an in-depth engagement with an excerpt from ‘The Tell Tale Heart’. Edgar Allan Poe is known for his macabre and gothic storytelling in mystery and horror fiction and Tell Tale Heart is among his more commonly recognised works, notably for its strong manipulation of narrative voice techniques. In my reading of the text I was particularly encaptured by the stylistic choices and use of unreliable narration as a tension builder, and my piece aims to pay homage to Poe's use of these to further his narrative exploration of the uncanny and other similar elements. The narrator voice in my piece repeatedly attempting to convince the girl/protagonist of her wellness emphasises the unreliability of the narration, not only in what is being conveyed to the audience, but also highlighting the disconnect between the narrator’s recount and what the girl herself may have genuinely been experiencing. Just as irony and juxtaposition are used throughout The Tell Tale Heart between the narrator and their actions, these lines contrast themselves, the narration dismissing the girl’s “begging” because, as it says, there is “nothing wrong”, despite her obvious distress and loss of control in the situation. Poe employs juxtaposition to heighten the tension and create a sense of unease throughout The Tell Tale Heart, with contrasts of sanity vs. insanity and light vs. darkness further highlighting the narrator's descent into madness.
