In the word homeless there are two root words, home and less. Home is what most people would define as the place where they live, or grew up. Less, simply means not as much as. When you combine the two together homeless equals someone who grew up in a home that was held to less standards than what they would normally be held up to. For example, someone who is homeless could live in a box, it sounds terrible but unfortunately it is a part of our reality. Not everyone can afford to live in a house, pay mortgage, and all the other expenses that come with the responsibility of owning a house, or home. Today homelessness still has an affect on many people.

Segregation still exists in the world today, racial divides affect many individuals in the areas of healthcare, education, access to mortgages, etc. (Mago, Vijay K et al. “Analyzing the Impact of Social Factors on Homelessness: A Fuzzy Cognitive Map Approach.) Black americans are most affected by homelessness. In the article written by the New York Times, the rate of black families attending homeless shelters is 7 times higher than white families. (Nagourney, Adam. “Old and on the Street: The Graying of America's Homeless.) It is no secret that whites are given priority, and privilege over people of other races. Most African Americans grow up in poverty, and it is hard for them to move up in social class because they are not given as many opportunities as others. As technology advances jobs, and the employment rate decrease due to the use of computerized equipment. Computers are now able to complete task that otherwise would be done by employers. An example would be the shutdown of a corporation know as Toys R Us. Toys R Us filed for bankruptcy. Toys R Us will be open for the holiday season, but as soon as the holiday season is over, they will be shutting down. This will affect millions, the current employees who depend on their income, will be struggle for awhile. So basically people are losing jobs, which means they are losing their income.
