Subgenres of Metal Heavy metal music has developed greatly ever since it was created in the late 1960’s, evolving into large and varied categories of subgenres. It is not uncommon for types of metal to be confused for one another despite their distinct differences. There are hundreds of subgenres, but three of them will be discussed, the bluesy and distorted doom metal, the fast and fantastical power metal, and the ill reputed black metal. Doom metal is the original form of the genre. It was invented when Tony Iommi, Black Sabbath’s guitarist, lost two fingertips on his fretting hand in a factory accident. In contrast to doom’s slow and fuzzy sound, power metal is uptempo and is characterized by strong clean vocals that typically tell a story. According to anthropologist Sam Dunn, power metal was born from Ronnie James Dio’s work with the band Rainbow in the late 1970s (Sam Dunn). Dio’s lyrics were often fantasy, medieval, folk, or science fiction oriented. The vocals are difficult or sometimes impossible to understand for people unaccustomed to them. Recording quality on black metal albums is intentionally low, usually done on a four track or even cassette tapes, to create an underground aesthetic. Black metal instrumentation is harsh. The guitars are high and distorted, the drums hit hard and sloppy, the bass simple or nonexistent, and the songwriting disturbing. Black metal is not meant to be accessible, with Gorgoroth’s vocalist even stating, “Black metal was never meant to reach an audience, it was purely for our own satisfaction.” (Chris Campion). Generally, black metal songs are about Satanism, death, murder, war, Paganism, and occasionally Nazism. Notable black metal bands include Burzum, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Bathory, Venom, Emperor, Carpathian Forest, Hellhammer, Archgoat, Dissection, and Enslaved.
