Wonder: August Pullman suffers from Treacher Collin syndrome, which has left his face deformed. After being homeschooled he is enrolled at Beecher Prep, a private school. August, or Auggie, befriends Jack and Summer at school. August is bullied throughout the schoolyear by a student named Julian. When Halloween rolled around August went to school dressed in a Bleeding Scream outfit. During this day at school August blends in with other kids and overhears Jack saying that if he looked like Auggie he would kill himself. Several months later Jack realizes that Auggie had overheard him. Jack begins to stand up for Auggie throughout the rest of the schoolyear. May, an elderly woman, is telling a story to Kate of a group of tiny people that live behind and under everyday things. These people are called the Borrowers. The story begins with the Clock family who live in the house of the elderly Aunt Sophy. Pod, the father of the family, has seen Aunt Sophy many times while out on a borrowing mission. She is always intoxicated when Pod sees her and believes she is hallucinating. One-day Pod was seen Aunt Sophy’s nephew. Pod was very concerned about this because Borrowers must live in secrecy. After much deliberation with his wife, Homily, Pod agrees to take their daughter, Arrietty, on a borrowing mission. The boy and Arrietty meet and talk, after which the boy agrees to help collect old doll furniture for them. Pod worries that taking items they don’t need to survive will have drastic effects on them. Mrs. Driver, the housekeeper, notices items missing and stumbles upon a cracked floor tile. She uncovers the Clock family and calls the exterminator right away. She has really big feet and long legs which caused her some trouble in her ballet class when she tripped her teacher. She is too tall to dance during recitals so she has to dance in the wings behind the curtains. During a ballet class one-day Miss Katherine announced that a man from Russia, Mr. Debato, would be coming to find talent for a dance festival in Washington, D.C. During Sassy’s audition she decided to take the advice of her Unlce Red and wear a bright color to stand out from the rest. Sassy stood out so much that Mr. Debato asked her to stand in the back row. After several rounds Sassy stood out the most amongst her peers and was invited to Washington, D.C. When Sassy arrived in D.C. she met Dwight, a student who was tall enough for her to dance with.
