A Veteran’s Legacy Imagine a Veteran of the Civil War reminiscing about the past. The veteran imagines how he was running away during a battle, because he was terrified. The veteran’s name is Henry Fleming. Henry talks about the battle of Chancellorsville and how he was afraid. The Battle of Chancellorsville was understandably terrifying, because it was one of the bloodiest struggles of the civil war (“The Battle: Chancellorsville”). Henry is so terrified, because he thinks that all of the opposing soldiers are shooting at him and only him (Crane). Stephen crane was a realistic writer, creating many books. The use of the barn catching fire illustrates how Henry has to be strong no matter how old he is and how he has to use his courage when he is no longer in the war to save other’s lives. The story says “When they dashed toward the barn it presented to their eyes its usual appearance, solemn, rather mystic in the black night” (Crane), which shows that the barn was a frightening sight and someone had to help the animals. Also, the fire occurring at night is important, because it creates an extra sense of fear. The quote “After quelling some boisterous frolic of the farm-hands and the boys in the garret, the old man had that night gone peacefully to sleep, when he was aroused by clamoring at the kitchen door” (Crane) shows how Henry was awoken to the sounds of people yelling that there was a fire in the barn. In conclusion, the short story “The Veteran” by Stephen Crane possess many elements that show that courage does not fade away when a soldier becomes a veteran. The short story uses dialogue, imagery, and setting to show that a soldier can be afraid, but still show courage and strength and risk their lives for others, no matter how old one is. Henry is a courageous and strong person and he showed this by running into a barn engulfed in flames to help several animals get out safely.
