Horror What do clowns, serial killers, dolls, ghosts, and monsters all have in common? They all strike fear into most, and that is what horror is designed to do. The genre horror brings out the emotion of fear, and horror always terrifies those who watch or read anything from this genre. An example of a movie that fits into the horror genre is It. If one has not seen the movie, it is about a group of seven young outcasts who must band together to overcome their fears and battle a bloodthirsty clown who preys on little children. But in order to completely know if It fits into the horror genre one must know what makes something fit into the genre of horror. One can see that It has foreshadowing because in the movie Pennywise the clown needs fear in order to live, and at the end of the movie the children do not fear him and he disappears into a drain. Pennywise needing fear is foreshadowed because while he is attacking the children he says, “Fear fear delicious fear”(Pennywise). At first, this seems like nothing, but then one begins to wonder why he would say that then one realizes that fear must mean something to him. Moving on one must see if It has suspense. An example of suspense in the movie is when a little boy named Georgie goes into his cellular to get wax and sees two glowing objects that resemble eyes, and when he shines his flashlight on the objects it turns out to be two toy clowns. This builds suspense because one thinks that something is going to attack him but nothing happens. Finally, an example of this movie inspiring fear in its audience is when Beverley Marsh turns and is grabbed by Pennywise. This shows fear because when this happened everyone in the theater jumped and screamed. Consequently one can see that It fits all the elements that put a movie in the horror genre, so, therefore, it must be a horror movie. Since It qualifies to be in the horror genre one could wonder would the movie have any other genres hidden in it. Comedy jumps out at the audience as well as horror. Comedy appears in the movie when Richie Tozier says, “I can’t believe I pulled the short straw. This wouldn’t have happened if we were going by penis size.” This shows that the writers of this movie put a joke into the movie and were trying to make the audience laugh. This would most likely make people laugh which would mean that It has a little comedy hidden throughout the
