The genre horror brings out the emotion of fear, and horror always terrifies those who watch or read anything from this genre. An example of a movie that fits into the horror genre is It. If one has not seen the movie, it is about a group of seven young outcasts who must band together to overcome their fears and battle a bloodthirsty clown who preys on little children. One can see that It has foreshadowing because in the movie Pennywise the clown needs fear in order to live, and at the end of the movie the children do not fear him and he disappears into a drain. Pennywise needing fear is foreshadowed because while he is attacking the children he says, “Fear fear delicious fear”(Pennywise). At first, this seems like nothing, but then one begins to wonder why he would say that then one realizes that fear must mean something to him. Moving on one must see if It has suspense. An example of suspense in the movie is when a little boy named Georgie goes into his cellular to get wax and sees two glowing objects that resemble eyes, and when he shines his flashlight on the objects it turns out to be two toy clowns. This builds suspense because one thinks that something is going to attack him but nothing happens. Finally, an example of this movie inspiring fear in its audience is when Beverley Marsh turns and is grabbed by Pennywise. This shows fear because when this happened everyone in the theater jumped and screamed. Consequently one can see that It fits all the elements that put a movie in the horror genre, so, therefore, it must be a horror movie. Since It qualifies to be in the horror genre one could wonder would the movie have any other genres hidden in it. Comedy jumps out at the audience as well as horror. Comedy appears in the movie when Richie Tozier says, “I can’t believe I pulled the short straw. This wouldn’t have happened if we were going by penis size.” This shows that the writers of this movie put a joke into the movie and were trying to make the audience laugh. The horror- the genre has been around well over one hundred- years there has been an extension of different types of horror and how the audience perceives horror. Many would even argue that horror films often reflect the fear of society in that certain time period. The evolution of horror reflects the evolution of society’s fear. These have been adapted from the early twentieth century, and have developed a whole series of genre conventions into a familiar variety of scary settings, iconography, and stereotyped characterisation. Audiences have a clear understanding of this, and they use it to their advantage. They can keep putting the audience through the jolts that horror conventions continue to give. An effective way of keeping the horror fresh would be to break the cycle, by breaking certain conventions. The isolated setting in the two films is a key device used to establish a threatening atmosphere.
The tension is constant, there are thrills, there are terrifying scenes, there is humour, there's even a cover-up. There are few horror films in which you'll so identify with potential victims. Jaws had all the conventions, the killer, the hero and the death sequences, the only convention it lacked was blood and gore, certainly when compared to modern day horrors. If you compare Saw (2004) to Jaws, Saw uses a multitude of special effects not available to Spielberg. As a result I think Saw is more intense and scary. I find Saw horrific and appauling, whereas I found Jaws tense and gory and still classed as horror genre.
Most authors use 4 utilities to make a story entertaining. They use the setting, mood, tone, and the archetypes to keep the author entertained. Cinderella by Jacob and WilHelm Grimm and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Marsha Hatfield were both scary because they showed how the tone and mood affected the story, themselves, and the readers at the same time. The horror genre is spooky and unlike other genres, because they are written to scare audiences. In order to do that authors and directors have to change settings, establish tones and moods, and use archetypes that are darker than all other genres. Multiple authors make similar decisions to create archetypes, setting, mood, and tones that uphold the horror genre.

The genre of horror films is one that is vast and continually growing. So many different elements have been known to appear in horror films that it is often times difficult to define what is explicitly a horror film and what is not. Due to this ambiguous definition of horror the genre is often times divided into subgenres. Each subgenre of horror has a more readily identifiable list of classifications that make it easier to cast a film to a subgenre, rather than the entire horror genre. One such subgenre that is particularly interesting is that of the stalker film. The stalker film can be categorized as a member of the horror genre in two ways. First, the stalker film can be identified within the horror genre due to its connection with the easily recognizable subgenre of horror, the slasher film. Though many elements of the stalker film differ from those of the slasher film, the use of non-mechanical weapons and obvious sexual plot points can be used to categorize the stalker film as a subgenre of the slasher film. Secondly, the stalker film can be considered a member of the horror genre using Robin Wood’s discussion regarding horror as that which society represses. Horror films are generally set in spooky old mansions, fog-ridden areas, or dark locales with unknown human, supernatural or grotesque creatures lurking about.
