The Romans use of Spectacle as Leisure

With the increase in society taking a stance against violence by many people, sports became an area where some feel that the violent acts, such as the hitting and fighting that occurs should be eliminated. The elimination of this violence should not be done in sport because the violence is a part of the game, which would only hurt its popularity. Violence has been around since time has started. People should just have to live with it and understand that violence has been in sports and leisure activities since the times of the Roman gladiators. There are numerous similarities with the violence that takes place in our sporting events today and the events that took place in the Colosseum.

I feel that athletes use violence as a "safety valve". The athletes themselves take out some of the aggression that builds from the pressures of the sport. They use violence to intimidate the other athletes as well as its spectators. The violence that occurs in the National Hockey League and the National Football League has been there since the beginning. Violence plays a major part in both of these sporting events. Without the "bone crushing hits," or the occasional fights that occur, these sports would not be the same. So far the body contact and the fighting that occurs is part of the show. Which certainly sells itself well. I feel that no one promotes this violence, but it just goes along with the sport. Without this violence these sports would be totally different. Its better that the violence that occurs between two willing combatants such as in sports, than in a situation involving spousal abuse. The majority of the times the female is being attacked against her consent. Allowing people not to be able to vent their frustrations through sport or watching sports in my mind would increase the violence that is happening away from the playing field.

The violence that occurs today in sports is not occurring any more than it did ten or twenty years ago. It is only being shown and talked about more by the mass media. If there was one group to blame for the increase in violence I feel that it would be the media, not the athletes themselves. In Roman times, violence was expected and promoted, just like in today's sports. It was just a social norm, meaning they knew when they went to the Colosseum, they were going to see violent acts.
