It is something that had nearly plagued parts of the world. Slavery had a negative impact on indigenous people and Africans earlier. Most of them were captured because of their racial origins. They were forced to work in terrible work conditions,and were paid less than a dollar. Child labour was one of the many horrible things children went through, because it was it put them at risk. Although slavery had been abolished by the Emancipation Act 1834, it still continues in many countries. Society has not responded enough to slavery because child labour is used to fulfill consumers with products by some companies today. For example, Joe fresh’s clothing is manufactured by poor paid workers at Bangladesh factories.Another example is Hershey, in West Africa , there are child labourers who harvest cocoa to produce these chocolates. Slavery is a system under which people are treated as property to be bought and sold, and are forced to work. Slavery was cruelty at its best. Slavery is described as long work days, a lack of respect for a human being, and the inability for a man or a woman to have gainful employment. The slaves were victimized the most for obvious reasons. Next on the list would be the families of both the slave and slave owners. At the bottom of the list would be the slave owners. Slavery does in fact victimize slaves, slave owner and their families by repeating the same cycle every generation.

To be black is to be naturally inferior; this was the mindset of the American South in the beginning of the 19th century. African Americans were confined to slavery with no means to change their situation or to escape the abuse that often accompanied their position. Slaves endured all forms of physical and mental punishment whose sole purpose was to keep them inferior to their white suppressors. Slaves were maintained through ignorance; they had their self-identity stolen from them and were kept illiterate to prevent them from questioning what power kept them oppressed and to prevent them from spreading word of the brutalities they faced. Frederick Douglass, an African American social reformer, leader of the abolitionist movement, and former slave, believed that the unnatural means of slavery had harmful effects on everyone within the institution of slavery. Although slaves faced physical, mental, and psychological abuse, slave owners were also degraded and ruined by the institution of slavery, because it distressed slaveholding families, caused warped forms of Christianity with unjust morals to arise, and reduced civil people to fiends through irresponsibility. Through his Narrative and his speeches, Douglass reasoned that if everyone within the institution of slavery was tarnished by it, then it must be unnatural, and therefore a threat to society as a whole that must be removed.

How can slavery be described? Maybe, not by many or not at all by those who have experienced it. Frederick Douglas offers one of the biggest insights into how slave life was. Slavery in America goes back to the start of the African Slave Trade (Class Notes). When the first ship came ashore Africans were amazed and had no idea or understanding of what was going to happen to them. Most of them had never seen white skin before, and the strange boats would journey them across the Atlantic. What is to be called the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade had started up. The voyage to America lasted eight, ten, twelve weeks. Hundreds would go and only a few survived the trip. People would die from starvation, disease; the survivors also ate them. Gottlieb Mittegeger a musician wrote," A woman about to give birth and unable to deliver under circumstances, was pushed through one of the portholes into the sea." (Zinn 43) The slave system destroyed the family structure. Mothers and fathers would see their children sold off. They went through the worst dehumanizing process. Blacks would work all day from sunrise to sunset.
Slavery was the main resource used in the Chesapeake tobacco plantations. The conditions in the Chesapeake region were difficult, which lead to malnutrition, disease, and even death. Slaves were a cheap and an abundant resource, which could be easily replaced at any time. Ira Berlin, Margaret Washington, Winthrop Jordan, and Edmund Morgan all take different approaches in their study of the origins of slavery in America and the role that race played. Berlin focuses on the societal shift from the Atlantic creoles of the charter generation to the black slaves of later ones. Washington on the other hand focuses on what made slaves from certain regions more desirable than others. During the era of 1450-1750 CE, the characteristics of human slavery throughout the world started as a system of assistance gained from the capturing of enemy soldiers and adopting them into the victors society, but changed to a large trafficking business reaching overseas, and then to inherited positions gained from being born into slavery. Anytime we hear the word “slavery”, we tend to think of the Southern United States during the Pre-Civil War era. What many people don’t know, is that this horrible act has occurred worldwide! The term “slavery” has many different definitions, and has occurred all throughout our world history. It wasn’t until the early 18th century that the thought of anti-slavery came about. Many economic, social, and technological forces have played a part in the decline of slavery around the globe.
Many people do not realize it but indeed we do have modern-day slavery. What is today’s modern day slavery? There are several things that can be put into today’s slavery. This is one problem that is often over looked in today’s society. It may not have as much impact as it did years ago, but if we stop and think about it, this problem is still as harsh and crude as it was years ago. I would think that up to some extent the problem has grown now because it is in fact often overlooked.
The word “slavery” brings back horrific memories of human beings. Bought and sold as property, and dehumanized with the risk and implementation of violence, at times nearly inhumane. The majority of people in the United States assumes and assures that slavery was eliminated during the nineteenth century with the Emancipation Proclamation. Unfortunately, this is far from the truth; rather, slavery and the global slave trade continue to thrive till this day. In fact, it is likely that more individuals are becoming victims of human trafficking across borders against their will compared to the vast number of slaves that we know in earlier times. Slavery is no longer about legal ownership asserted, but instead legal ownership avoided, the thought provoking idea that with old slavery, slaves were maintained, compared to modern day slavery in which slaves are nearly disposable, under the same institutionalized systems in which violence and economic control over the disadvantaged is the common way of life. Modern day slavery is insidious to the public but still detrimental if not more than old American slavery.
