Similarities & Differences of “The Rocking Horse Winner” In the story “The Rocking Horse Winner,“ the author and film director use direct & indirect characterization, symbolism, and biblical allusion to illustrate the theme that family relationships are more important than wealth and high social status. In the book, Hester is described as an unloving parent. When reading further in the book there family doesn’t really show love towards one another. When other people come around such as company they turn into the most loving family. “She had bonny children, yet she felt they had been thrust upon her, and she could not love them. And she felt she must cover up some fault in herself. Nevertheless, when her children were present, she always felt the center of her heart go hard” (379). Hester trying to hide her emotions, she is very resentful and isolated as a woman. “Only she herself knew that at the center of her heart was a hard little place that could not feel love, no, not for anybody” (379). “I never told you, mother, that if I can ride my horse, and get there, then I’m absolutely sure oh absolutely! Mother, did I ever tell you? I’m lucky” (391). Paul starts gambling with Bassett at the horse race track. Paul is winning a lot of money, so he wants to help out his mother by giving her a thousand pounds per year for five years. She ends up wanting all of the money at once. The more Hester has, the more she wants. This is bad for Hester, because she lacks the quality required, certainly because she is greedy. Paul would ride his rocking horse to determine what horse would win the races. The rocking horse symbolized fear. Paul would ride his horse very petrifying, that he would leave people worried about him and that horse. It also, seemed as if Paul thrust out even into a much darker place than his rocking
