The young city-state of Rome became a Republic in the fifth century BC. One of the many factors that lead to the growth of Rome as a republic and eventually as an empire was their success in the Punic Wars against the Phoenicians. The Punic Wars was both a critical moment and a changing point in Rome's history. After both Punic Wars, the Roman republic reined supreme all around the Mediterranean Sea and by the late first century BC, Rome had control of most of the known world.
