As society progresses more and more it seems as though there is one aspect of American culture that is not keeping up with the times- the minimum legal drinking age. Whilst the rest of the world shares a similar view on this issue, with 96% of other countries holding a drinking age of less than 21, the American legal system seems steadfast in its resolve to keep it due to a manner of precautionary reasons. However, alcohol related accidents had decreased across all age groups and demographics across the country, thus questioning the validity of such studies. Moreover, Studies have shown that traffic related accidents are much lower in European countries that often have drinking ages 5 years below the American standard. There are many aspects to the drinking law that need to be taken into consideration, but at the end of the day, any law that is being disregarded and abused needs to be revised and corrected. America was built on change, and that same mentality needs to be applied to the growing problem that is the legal drinking age.
