Today, people live in the 21st century where people have many choices of entertainment. They have many options at their disposal. One of the oldest forms that we tend to take for granted is television. Cooking shows, game shows, comedy shows, and dramas are just a few of the thousands of television shows that meet every entertainment taste. There are so many shows on television that many people don’t know which shows to watch. Comedy television shows are a classic. Family shows are one of the most watched comedy shows. They are something that kids can enjoy while still keeping the parents entertained. Full House, a show about a typical family with a few extraordinary people; The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, a show about a troubled teen taken in by his uncle and aunt; and The Cosby Show, a show about a family and all typical family troubles and disagreements; are just a few extremely popular shows that have kept families laughing for years. Male nurses are often viewed as more aggressive, incompetent and working in a predominantly female profession. In recent years, there has been a gender shift in crime dramas on television. In the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, the viewer saw the lead characters to be heavily male dominated with a woman thrown in for mostly sex appeal. Nowadays, most crime dramas are either gender balanced or even female dominated. As this shift has occurred, many new issues began to spawn. Having female lead characters in these types of dramas allow younger female viewers to see that females are capable of working in a usually heavily male dominated workplace and hold positions of power and leadership. However, women in these roles seem to be giving an unrealistic image of women in this type of work environment. While crime dramas can provide young female viewers with strong female role models, the unrealistic image portrayed by these female leads often undermines the realities of motherhood and being a woman in the workplace.
Family Guy, an ongoing show, which has won three primetime Emmys (IMDB), has had trouble resulting in the cancellation of the show twice, due to its “gags per minute about race, sex, incest, bestiality, etc.” (Peacocke 300), Stephen Dubner, co-author of Freakonomics, described Family Guy. This show “purposely offends just about every group of people you could name” (Peacocke 300), New York Times journalist, Stuart Elliot claimed. However, this satire show is rated for ages 14 and over even, though it is of an adult animation category. Family Guy produces comedy from the faults and imperfection of the U.S. society in a derisive and sometimes bigoted way. But some jokes, Antonia Peacocke, a student at Harvard University, said to be, “more tame and insightful, the kind you might expect from the New Yorker” (306). Television has come a long way since it was first introduced. Originally, it was thought that the masses that watch television enjoyed the more simple shows that would tell you exactly what was going on from start to finish. In Steven Johnson’s article, “Watching TV Makes You Smarter”, Johnson argues that this is actually not the case. In fact, Johnson argues that much more people enjoy shows that involve multi threading, or multiple plots that are all connected.
For example, while soap operas tend to be exceedingly sensational and over the top, most comedies gloss over the terrible things that may befall a family. Gritty crime shows and other dramas try to portray families more accurately, but still must follow certain rules. For this reason, dramas still tend to be unrealistic. The recent rise of popular cable television programs highlight key content regulations that contribute heavily to inaccurate family portrayals and ultimately, the broadcast networks’ decline.

In the current television broadcasting, stereotypical behavior goes from programming for the very small to adult audiences.
