What is considered femininity in today’s such diverse and cultural society? There are various depictions throughout the world of what being feminine is. Contemporary femininity in the North American society is described by Shaw in the textbook, “...includes soft, passive, domestic, nurturing…dependent, sensitive, as well as delicate, intuitive…needy, fearful and so forth,” and these adjectives describe what femininity is considered to be (Shaw 116). This shows that women are expected by society to act in a certain way that is considered to be society’s version of femininity. Shaw explained, “These aspects involve the chaste, domestic, caring mother or Madonna and the sexy, seducing, fun-loving playmate or whore,” in the book in terms of showing what the two types of women there are considered to be in society (Shaw 117). Society and men only see one or the other spectrum when it comes to the type of women they want to be associated with based on that woman’s femininity. These complete opposite side of the spectrum, “…cause tension as women navigate the implications of these aspects of femininity in their everyday lives.” (Shaw 117). Women are put inside an invisible box that conforms them to what society considers being feminine. If you do not act, look, speak, walk, talk, or even breathe femininely the way society thinks you should, then you’re considered not a “normal” woman. Women and men, and society judged the differences between us all throughout growing up and even more so when high school came. I personally did not like to do my hair, or put on makeup. I did not care to take pride in the way I looked at school. I did not keep myself physically fit, and I was very reserved and shy when it came to making friends. This shows you two opposite people even though we are identical twins we are not exactly the same. Society, meaning high school body, judged how I was not feminine like Emily, or did not care to represent myself like Emily does. I ended up conforming to what society considers being feminine with a little help from my sister. You can call it a makeover or call it a change, but society treated me differently when I conformed to what was considered feminine.
I went to school my sophomore year with banana curled hair and a little bit of makeup that my sister had put on me. In addition to that, I wore a nice pair of dark blue jeans with a cheery red and loose blouse. I had joined cheerleading, secured a job, and began to get in shape.
