The Pros And Cons Of Designer Babies

1379 Words3 Pages

Organisms grow by copying their DNA. As time passes, an error may occur during the copying of DNA. This causes defects in organism. Also, evolution causes organisms to differ from one another. These causes lead to imperfection and deformities. Humans want their children to be perfect, but children can be born with flaws. Some flaws cannot be changed because they are in their genes. These imperfection need to be changed before they are born. Perfection is tempting, but it is not easy to achieve. Genetic engineering babies has only recently been introduced to the world. Scientists have tried to transfer and alter genes in organisms to prevent inherited diseases and undesirable characteristics from being passed down to the offspring. To engineer organisms, it requires scientists to alter the sequence of genes. There are risks factors to these experiments, but some well off people are willing to take the chances to create the perfect baby. Designing babies have their pros and cons. Are designer babies morally right or wrong?

With new technology comes great responsibility. Are all these innovations benefitting to humankind? What is to become of the human race? People can now travel long distances faster due to the invention of cars, plane, and rockets. Communication time is shortened due to computers and phones. Missing limbs can be replaced with artificial limbs. Flawed babies can become less flawed with genetic engineering. Designing your baby is by “selecting or alternating an embryo” (Verlinsky, 2005). Do you want to create the perfect human being? Designing your baby sounds alluring, but do not let it fool you. Designer babies give rise to safety risks, the ability to change society, and total control over the next
