Planned Parenthood is a foundation that has caused quite a stir in the media as of late. The company and the controversy surrounding it has gone so far as to have an incredible impact upon the recent election. For many, Planned Parenthood is only known as an abortion clinic. Upon further research, Planned Parenthood has defined themselves and created the trademark of, “a non-profit organization that does research into and gives advice on contraception, family planning, and reproductive problems”. Whether one is in support of Planned Parenthood and the feminist autonomy it provides, the organization has proven to have incredibly positive and negative effects in the lives of women, the community, and the government. With recent elections as well as scandal surrounding Planned Parenthood, Republicans in congress have moved for defunding of the organization, if only for a year. “This legislation threatens millions of people 's access to preventive health care,” Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards said Thursday in a statement. “In their obsession with attacking women’s access to health care, extreme members of Congress would take basic health care away from people who need it most --- those who are struggling to get by, who rely on Medicaid or have no health insurance, and those who live in areas with few medical options.” What they do not realize is cutting off funds for an organization that services millions of women and families, could result in a higher birth rate, a higher number of unwanted pregnancies, and a higher risk of STIs.
