The Pillow Book is a book of observations that were recorded and documented by Sei Shōnagon. In this work, the author gives direct insight into what life was like for a female in Medieval Japan. According to the text, it states, “… The women were generally hidden away, secured in their residences in spaces behind paper doors and screens through which they would usually speak with their visitors unseen” (1128). This statement helps emphasize that women were ideally segregated from men. Women, at this time, were probably kept separate in order to ensure that their purity and virtue remained intact. They were disallowed from having visitors and spent much of their time either alone or amongst other females. In the introduction, it also states,
Thesis Statement: Men and women were in different social classes, women were expected to be in charge of running the household, the hardships of motherhood. The roles that men and women were expected to live up to would be called oppressive and offensive by today’s standards, but it was a very different world than the one we have become accustomed to in our time. Men and women were seen to live in separate social class from the men where women were considered not only physically weaker, but morally superior to men. This meant that women were the best suited for the domestic role of keeping the house. Women were not allowed in the public circle and forbidden to be involved with politics and economic affairs as the men made all the
When studying gender roles in history, one will find that females are often depicted in similar ways, no matter the era or region of study. Even when comparing the industrialized, early, twentieth century to today’s progressive era, there are striking similarities between female roles. We can see that over the course of the twentieth century, the qualities of loyalty and honesty have decreased in marriages due to the treatment of the two main female roles as depicted in literature. The first was the role of the wife. The wife was often portrayed as a housekeeper and a nanny.
Women in this era had just begun to secure some freedom from their typical cultural expectations. They were expected to take care of the children, cook, clean, sew and be presentable to society. As jobs were made available to women, only a low percentage of these women started to work outside of the home. This means that many women had chosen to stay inside the home to remain in the role of “house keeper”. Even though the woman attained some freedom they were still considered inferior to men. Men still had the most authority in the household and
As we first get into the book, we find out that the origins of comfort stations i.e. military brothels are unknown, but official documents strongly suggest that the Japanese Imperial Forces created comfort stations roughly around 1931-1932 for Japanese sailors. In the introduction we get some of Tanaka’s personal opinions and thoughts, and a vivid account of what it felt like to be a comfort woman by a Filipina. “Twelve soldiers raped me in quick succession, after which I was given half an hour rest. Then twelve more soldiers followed. I bled so much and was in such pain; I could not even stand up” (p.1). During the war, the Japanese could see that their soldiers were committing mass rape toward civilians. That led military leaders to ask the Japanese government for comfort stations to be made in order to prevent such crimes. This is a quote from a Japanese Lieutenant-General in 1932. “Recently I have heard a lot of scandalous stories, including that some of our soldiers wander around seeking women. Such a phenomenon is hard to prevent as fighting becomes less frequent. Therefore the establishment of appropriate facilities must be accepted as a good cause and should be promoted” (p.10). They were also created to boost soldier morale and to prevent the spread of VD among fellow troops. In the first couple of chapters Tanaka explains how women from different countries were procured into working as sex slaves and how they were brought into such dealings. The women used for comfort houses were at first professional Japanese prostitutes, and poor Japanese and Korean women. They were usually recruited by an agent who would go to a specific town and look for girls to recruit. Of course deceit was used to get these girls to come in that they were promised a nice paying job, food, and shelter if they came along. The recruiting of Korean women was a way of the Japanese to colonize their newly gai...
It was a difficult life for women in the 14th century. The women were not valued as much as men. They did not receive much respect and did not have many rights. They were treated like objects by men. Women were not educated as they weren’t allowed to go to school. Three of the main things women in the 14th century did not have were the right to own property, the right to take part in a job, and respect.

Confucian beliefs dictated how the children were raised according to their gender. At the time of a girl’s birth, she is placed below the bed and given a piece of broken pottery. As a female, being placed beneath the bed signifies her low rank. The piece of pottery symbolizes her duty to practice house labors and primary duties. Later in their childhood, girls were expected to stay behind in the women’s quarters and were forbidden to go out often. From their young age, they were also taught not to disrespect authority; the authority being a male. This emphasizes the patriarchal hierarchy of
The role of women under the Tokugawa Shogunate and that under Ming China were both inferior to that of men, due to Confucianism. Women were highly discriminated without much rights and were considered submissive to men. The phenomenon were largely caused by the traditional Chinese philosophy influencing both Ming China and Tokugawa Shogunate. However, depite the similar inferiority, the women’s conditions were slightly different.
This source provided the unique perspective of what was thought to be the perfect household, with a man who worked and a wife who cooked and cleaned. However, it also showed how a woman could also do what a man can do, and in some cases they could do it even better. This work is appropriate to use in this essay because it shows how men talked down to their wives as if they were children. This work shows the gradual progression of woman equality and how a woman is able to make her own decisions without her husband’s input.
In modern culture many traditional values have been lost, these values/attributes are deemed the key to success. Admiral William H McRaven has written a list of lessons that he has followed and believes can help anyone make a difference in their life. He takes us through his experiences both good and bad within his Navy SEAL training to convey the ideology of discipline.
Society at this time was dominated by men, making women live extremely challenging and limited lives. The position and status of a woman ultimately depended on that of her husband. She was not given many rights unless it was allowed by her husband. Women had to withstand arranged marriages and there were times they encountered abuse from their spouse. What many people do not see in this society is that women longed for their own empowerment and they wanted to be given the opportunity to create their own success in life without being overshadowed by their husbands. Women were supposed to be seen and not heard. They did not carry a voice in this society. This was a way of life for women "the relations of the sexes were restructured to one of
The Grim Sleeper is one of the most gruesome serial killers cases known in United States. The case dumbfounded LAPD for years. The Grim Sleeper left fear in the women of Los Angeles especially African American women who were the target of this merciless serial killer and rapist. The Grim Sleeper case was infamous due to his string of murders spanning through almost three decades. The coalition launched a media campaign and set a monetary reward aiming to capture the killer. Motivations involved in serial killings are fears of rejection, power, and perfection. Serial killers tend to be insecure, and irrationally scared of rejection. Serial killers tend to avoid developing painful relationships. They are terrified of being abandoned, humiliated,
Women roles have changed drastically in the last 50 to 80 years, women no longer have to completely conform to society’s gender roles and now enjoy the idea of being individuals. Along with the evolution of women roles in society, women presence and acceptance have drastically grown in modern literature. In early literature it was common to see women roles as simply caretakers, wives or as background; women roles and ideas were nearly non-existent and was rather seen than heard. The belief that women were more involved in the raising of children and taking care of the household was a great theme in many early literatures; women did not get much credit for being apart of the frontier and expansion of many of the nations success until much later.
When it comes to children books, fictional children books are definitely one of the more popular types for kids. In Cover to Cover by Kathleen Horning, she defines fiction as types of books that “offer a rich diversity of style, content, and form to satisfy a variety of tastes, interests, and abilities of young readers” (Horning 138). The book that I chose that I feel relates well with Horning’s definition of fiction is Katherine Paterson’s story Bridge to Terabithia for a couple of reasons. One of them is that Horning talks about how fictional books have many genres and one of them is fantasy Paterson’s story. I believe this fits well with how Horning describes fantasy fiction books. Another aspect in Cover to Cover’s fiction chapter
