Society has ethical and unethical decisions that are being made every day. Ethical decisions are hard to make when it comes to money, friends, or even jobs, but they are of course better as there are fewer consequences in the long run. Unethical decisions may seem as if they are the right choice to make at that particular time, but in the long run, they could have worse consequences. The Josephson Institute Model helps to make decisions in the moment, by taking the time to be clear and thorough. The Josephson’s Institute Model works best with the “Pillars of Character” as they are essential to making a decision. The ethical issue at hand would be, whether or not to tell the police about the group of friend’s that your high school had with him. The issue is whether to tell the police or protect your friend, even though sexual assault was the accusation being made. I could both tell the police, and suffer the consequences when it comes to being friends with this person, as they could oppose or get angry. I could also decide to not speak up about knowing anything about the people being accused, or even knowing my high school friend, in order to keep them as friends and not make the sexual assault seem all that bad. I would have to choose telling the police because it is simply the right thing to do. I think that it is the right thing to do because if my friend, or his friends were capable of acting in such a manner, then why would I want to be associated with this behavior. I have to look at what the ethical values are being put up against, whether that may be ethical values or other than ethical values. In this particular situation, ethical values are not being put up against other than ethical values. Although ethical values are not up against other than ethical values, it is definitely that they are up against ethical values. I know this because I am stuck between friendship and sexual assault; the two definitely put me in a tough situation, which makes it ethical values against ethical values. I have to look at the pillars of character and decide which is the greatest good between the two ethical values. I have a responsibility to my fellow NDNU peer to help them find who is responsible for the assault. I have to respect the fact that they have a right to know, especially because I could be an essential part in this, with bringing forth people who could be at fault. I think that trustworthiness comes into play because I have to be able to trust that someone would do this for me, and I have to trust that my friend will not be as mad as I think. Fairness and caring are other aspects as they are just things that this person who was sexually assaulted deserves to have; and being a good citizen is my duty as NDNU teaches us to be good people.
