Stephen Chbosky’s film, The Perk’s of Being a Wallflower, based on his book of the same title follows the story of a teenager named Charlie who is adjusting to prepare for his first day of high school as a normal student. He suffers mental illness resulting from his repression of emotions of past events that he is traumatized by and tries to cope and start anew the upcoming year. He meets two friends that open their arms, accept him into their group and through him they tell their personal stories of their dreams to find themselves and leave behind their narrow-minded town. Sam was a genuine girl who was kind and had great taste in music. She was molested by her father’s boss as a young girl. Charlie was warned by his sister to about her past of being with multiple guys and doing drugs. Craig who she dated was 3 years her senior while Charlie was 3 years her junior. For being violated at such a young age, she believed that she deserved the guys she was looking in for love. Patrick and Sam’s are siblings by marriage and what happened to her is possibly in part what separated her biological parents. Patrick, I believe, was just affected by the split of his own parents as well having relationship issues. His nickname, at school, was “nothing” and he went along with it. However, he was something to someone and that could be why he suffered through with his unhealthy relationship with Brad. He would drink, abuse drugs, and have sex to numb himself. Homosexuality hasn’t always been considered deviant but it is now because many people consider it to be the abnormal way to have sex. Brad had to keep his personal life secret because his father wouldn’t approve and neither would his so called friends. He was more of a convenient friend who was open to conversing and spending time with Charlie when he so felt necessary because he was lonely.
