The Patriot is a historical fiction war film about the American Revolution war during the years of 1775 to 1783. The director of the film, Roland Emmerich, did a good job portraying the life of colonist and the British in his film. The filmmakers used strong themes to help the film carry out the American Revolution War for the characters in the war and those not. With the help of leading actors, Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger, the characters in the film were portrayed in-depth. Although much of the film was fictional there are moments of truth to it.

The director of The Patriot, Roland Emmerich, goal was to show his audience how the colonist took part in American Revolution. The filmmakers depict The Patriot as a successful movie explaining the war and how the Colonies won against the British. The film illustrates the writer’s main point of freedom. For instance, in the film both sides, British and Continentals, offer freedom to slaves who fought in the war after twelve months of service. Not only would slaves be grant freedom in the film but if Continentals won they too would have freedom from the British. There are some things that filmmakers could have improved on such as, when Gibson’s character killed all the red coats. There were at least twenty red coats who took his son Gabriel and there is no way that one person, with the help of two children, could have killed them all. Another thing the filmmakers could have done better was not using multiply soldiers’ lives to create a new character for the war. Focusing more on one Continental soldier could have made the film more factual than fictional. However, the usage of more than one Continental soldier gave a better and longer storyline for the film.
The Patriot represents the American Revolution War in-depth and realistically. The film explores what it truly means to want freedom and was crucial for the film to be a success. It is an emotional and inspirational movie thanks to the acting of Gibson and Ledger, not only were colonist portrayed in-depth but the British as well. Although there are fictional parts of the film, many parts were based off of factual events or people in the war. If filmmakers would have focus more on the facts the movie could have been more successful, otherwise the filmmakers did well
