INTRODUCTION
This week, we studied the Parthenon in Athens, Greece and the Pantheon in Rome. In this essay, I will discuss the style and function of each of these buildings. I will consider whether or not each is a typical example of the architecture of their culture. Finally, I will compare and contrast the similarities and differences of these two cities as seen in the architecture of these buildings.
DISCUSSION
Style and Function Parthenon
The Parthenon was a temple, constructed in ancient Athens to “replace two other temples” used to worship the Greek God Athena. It also housed the treasury. Emperor Hadrian completed the new building around 14 AD. It has the “world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome”, and features a “portico of large granite Corinthian columns”.
The name Pantheon means “of, relating, or common to all the gods”. It is believed this was because of the statues of many different deities it housed, or the dome that “looked like the heavens”. Since the seventh century, it has been used as a church dedicated to St. Mary and the Martyrs. (Pantheon, Rome 2016). The architectural style, Corinthian, is common to the period and location. It was also filled with sculptures representing the various deities they worshipped.
Similarities of Parthenon and Pantheon
Both buildings were constructed using common architectural styles for their respective locations and periods. Both contained art related to the worship of their respective deities. Both have survived, at least partially, to this day. Both are influential pieces of architecture.
Differences of Parthenon and Pantheon
The Greek Parthenon was dedicated to one deity, Athena, whereas the Pantheon was dedicated to many deities. The architecture of the Parthenon was in the Doric style, whereas the Pantheon was in the Corinthian
