A Traumatic Experience

“My dog laid dead five days without a grave...” (line 1)
When Richard Wilbur was ten, a very traumatic thing happened when he lost his dog. This event led him eventually to write the poem “The Pardon,” which is based on that event. He shows us in this poem that death is nothing to be scared of, and we need to learn to forgive ourselves for our prior mistakes.
“The Pardon” is about a little boy (the persona) whose dog dies when the boy is ten years old. The dead dog was ignored by the boy for five days, and the boy feels guilty about that. This guilt follows the boy as he grows up, and in the poem, he confesses he still has nightmares about that sad time in his life. These nightmares cause the persona to become afraid and cry for his old dog.
The poem ends with the persona telling us that he dreamed that you can always be forgiven for your past, no matter how long ago it was. He wonders if “this was false or honest dreaming” (line 23), meaning if it is true or if it is just something he imagined in a dream. Either way, he asks for forgiveness from death, as if it were a real person, and mourns his dead dog, trying to make up for when he was a ten year old.
I believe that in this poem, the speaker (or persona) is Richard Wilbur himself. I think this because he uses the first person pronouns “I” and “my” multiple times. While there is no proof that the persona is actually Wilbur, it appears that he wrote this poem from personal experience. Wilbur’s poem shows us that he still remembers the death of his pet and that the memory still haunts him. He writes this poem to anyone who would listen, to try to clear his conscience and get a huge weight off his shoulders. In the title, Wilbur gives us a pretty good hin...

...and its corpse before he got a formal resting place. The fifth stanza has phrases such as “carnal sun”, “hymn of flies”, and “death breeding in his lively eyes” to describe the dog that Wilbur saw in his dreams. These phrases help show us the scary image and help us understand why it was a nightmare. The words “hymn of flies” also have a deeper meaning. A hymn is normally sung at a funeral, and in the poem, the dog is dead. To the persona, the buzz of the flies sound like a sad hymn.
In this poem, Wilbur shows that we need to properly grieve death, or it will come back and haunt us. He also shows that you need to forgive yourself for past mistakes, no matter how long ago it was. I really liked this poem, although it was tough to understand at first. Once I understood the general purpose of the poem, I was able to dive deeper to catch the hidden meanings of the poem.
