Jadaka Ross MYP English 2 Mrs.Hofler 17 November 2015 Why Are You Banned? Why are so many good books being banned? So many authors have taken their time to write these inspirational stories, and they have been banned. The authoritative figures over what books are banned or not are missing the big picture that the content that seems bad, is really what makes the story. For example, The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, is a classic that teaches many good life lessons and should be read by all teens. S.E.Hinton proved the story to be true by incorporating scenes that have close life relations, universal themes, and language. Some people feel The Outsiders should be banned because of language and the theme of adolescents on their own (Sarah Reads 2). The story also has a lot of violence scenes that some feel are too extreme for young readers. Some of the book’s content is inappropriate for minors, and servers as a way teens should act out towards their parents (Sarah Reads 3). The story has many references to sex, drugs, fighting, start of gangs, being disrespectful, and using foul language. As a cause of the author, S.E. Hinton allowing these things to be …show more content…
Themes including family, brotherhood, respect for others, and also self-respect. The author used these themes to help the reader can relate to others things they have read or seen, or experienced (Angieville 2-3). The author used the family as a way to show the close connections they had for each other. In the story each brother had to stick up for their brother no matter what the situation was, or how the bad the condition of the situation was (The Outsiders 220) . Each brother had to support and up lift each other, because family was all that they had. There are many people across the nation that value family. They value the importance of family, and that in the end family is the people that will be there after the
The novel the outsiders should be banned because it has violence things that happens in the novel. “But dally, heaters kill people’’,kill em with switchblades to, dontcha?” This quote states that the characters in the book are really dangerous. All this violence should not be told to kids, teens.
Many might think that all teenage or young adult books would be filled with happy thoughts and positive things, but you don't learn lessons from everything being perfect. That’s where banned or challenged books come along. A challenged book is a book that has been requested by many to be moved off a library's shelf. A banned book is a challenged book the has been removed from the shelves. The Outsiders was one of the best-selling books of its time and has won 5 awards since. It was banned and challenged for many reasons by many school districts. By examining its usage of expose on family dysfunction, strong language and portrayal of gang violence, it is clear why some would have it banned.
The Outsiders, an enthralling novel by S.E Hinton, is an excellent story about the hardships and triumphs experienced by the Greasers and the Socs two rival gangs. S.E Hinton tells a thrilling tale about the Socs and the Greasers that are two gangs and she characterize how they live. Ponyboy, his brother and his friends have to deal with the challenges relating to their environment. The three most important topics of The Outsiders are survival, social class and family support.
With the thought that someone can be hurt by reading a book, people will try to challenge and ban them. To ban a book is to have it restricted from a certain age or audience. Banning and challenging books is trying to keep a certain book away from an audience due to sexual content, going against religious beliefs, language and vulgarity, violence, drugs, self-harm, racism, occult/satanic views, promoting gangs, and going against community standards. An argument from someone who believes books should not be banned is that it is important for the age group to learn about certain content and material as they grow up. Due to controversial content, the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald should be banned.
Mrs. Hinton’s The Outsiders was a delight to read. While I might have enjoyed it, I must disagree with who the author has chosen to base her book on and here’s why. While Hinton chose to write about a young man doomed to repeat his mistake multiple times until eventually, he sees the error of his ways. We see in the beginning Ponyboy admits that he’s not to walk alone merely because the Soc (Socials) will jump any Greaser this, of course, does not deter Ponyboy as he makes this same blunder throughout the book. Eventually, causing tension among his family and the death of three people. I do believe Hinton had two good choices there is Johnny Cage an abused teen and Dallas “Dally” Winston a hardened criminal.
Books are banned for many reasons but more times than not it is because of the sensitive information found within the novel that agitates the reader. As long as people have been able to develop their own opinions, others have sought to prevent them from sharing. At some point in time, every idea has ultimately become objectionable to someone. The most frequently challenged and most visible targets of such objection are the very books found in classrooms and public libraries. These controversial novels teach lessons that sometimes can be very sensitive to some but there is much more to challenged books than a controversial topic. What lies within these pages is a wealth of knowledge, such as new perspectives for readers, twisting plots, and expressions that are found nowhere else. For example, To Kill A Mockingbird, contains references to rape, racial content, and profanity that have caused many to challenge the novel in the first place. The book was banned from countless
The Outsiders is a book that changed the style of young adult writers because it went off from the genre that young adult writer were using during that time period. The reader sees the everyday problems that teenagers were going through, “I can’t take much more Johnny spoke my own feelings I’ll kill myself or something” (Hinton 47). Johnny felt unloved because his parents treat him bad and say hurtful things to him, but when Johnny is with the gang he feels loved because they embrace him, and let him stay at their house if he cannot bear to go home to his parents. So many writers were use to telling fairy tells and fables, the realism of the outsiders made it the first of its kind during the time period it was written. Todd Howard points this out in his book Understanding The Outsiders, “ Thus the overwhelming commercial success that The Outsiders enjoyed among teens shortly after its first publication, it sent astonished publishers scurrying to find writers who could duplicate the novel’s formula and gave a pause to literary critics” (Howard 8). Authors in the early sixty’s never thought about writing a book showing the gang and social class differences, and this is why The Outsiders was a successful book because it opened people’s eyes to the problems some...
All in all, the permeating theme of S. E. Hinton’s The Outsiders is Your personal decisions can always affect the people closest to you. I Picked this Theme because I think i fits the best with the book Many people Kill and get killed because of one dumb decision/
Banning Books “It’s not just the books under fire now that worry me. It is the books that will never be written, the books that will never be read. And all due to the fear of censorship. As always, young readers will be the real losers” (Blume 1999). Judy Blume can not explain the problem of book censorship any clearer.
Books that have shaped America are slowly starting to disappear. Many of the previous social norms have fallen out of fashion, and because of this reason numerous books are beginning to become banned. Blasphemy, racism, sex, and violence are all ethical reasons for books to be censored.
Many significant novels have unfortunately been challenged/ banned at a certain point in time. Most of these literary classics face this because some contain sexual references, religious intolerance, and inappropriate language. Some cases books are being pulled off shelves because people believe that they were “tangibles of instruction” or the reason being was as a precaution towards a possible public attack which took effect in Tucson for the Mexican American Studies. (source:8) Another case is the Mozert v. Hawkins County Board of Education; Christian sewed the board because they believed that the required textbooks hurt their beliefs. (Source:8)
The Outsiders is a novel by S.E Hinton, that follows a young boy named Ponyboy who grows up in a gang. Johnny, Sodapop and Darry help him find how he fits into the world and without them he would have a hard time finding his own identity. Without having a close group of friends he would have a tough way of life, especially with the Socs. Being in a group that you associate with, that have different values to yourself can lead you to disregard your own ethics and do things you wouldn’t normally do, but at the same time this can assist and reinforce your own values…
There are multiple reasons why a book can be banned or challenged. Book banning causes the removal of materials in schools and libraries due to “inappropriate” content. The Lovely Bones, by Alice Sebold, was banned due to sexual content and language.
The first big theme is family. In the novel the Outsiders family was the only thing keeping them sane. All over the world family is important and just like it is for the Curtis brothers. In the novel the Outsider it states;”That his silent fear, then-of losing another person he
