Same Beginnings Different Endings Taylor Thompson Florida Gulf Coast University The Other Wes Moore describes what could be the beginning of a time that is consumed with racial violence and drug use. It is a time where drugs and weapons are being used more than ever for recreational and unnecessary use. The Other Wes Moore does not only explain the story of two children growing up, also it points out the differences between them and shows how such differences can change the outcome of the rest of their lives. The Other Wes Moore describes the lives of two differently raised children, both with the name Wes Moore. Both children were raised in between Washington D.C and Maryland, only a few blocks down the street from each other. “Author Wes” came from a loving family with two siblings and both parents. The parents cared for their children’s well-being and wanted what was best for them. Even if “Author Wes’” mother was strict, she knew the potential her child had and was making sure he knew it too. Though while all seemed well, soon in “Author Wes’” life, the father passed away from breathing issues. That did not stop the mother from pushing “Author Wes” to be the best he could be. The book shows how much of an influence drugs and violence have on children’s lives and it has only gotten worse over the past few decades. For Example, the book describes a time where “Other Wes” gets very upset and tries to hurt another kid with a knife resulting in the police getting involved (Other Wes Moore, pg 33 & 34). That was not the only time the book describes violence. Throughout the book “Other Wes’” older brother, Tony, was getting involved in violence, and this book took place in the 1980’s. Decades later, there are still many incidents especially in this year alone where police officers and the black community have been involved. These are shootings, drug busts, and other violent situations, very similar to what is described in the book. Now, there are two major movements splitting up America. “Black Lives Matter” and “Blue Lives Matter” are the groups that our society is choosing from depending on their beliefs on who is doing wrong in these situations. “Black Lives Matter”, being the black community, feel that authority figures are taking advantage of their high ranking. “Blue Lives Matter”, armed and authority figures, feel that they are doing their job to make sure America is safe, no matter what they have to do.
